Going To Open in St. Andrews, 2010-Advice Needed

A few of us are thinking of heading to St. Andrews for the Thursday and Friday of this year's Open. We're thinking of driving to the North, getting the ferry across, etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, especially when it comes to accomodation. Can anybody suggest where we might stay that wouldn't be too far away from the course? I'm presuming we won't get any accomodation within 20 miles..........would we?

All other bits of advice are welcome also.

Been at a few Open, but not at St Andrews though. But in my experience all the courses are very well serviced by public transport especially trains from major towns cities. For example attended Open in Troon in 2004 and stayed in Glasgow city centre, special trains to and from the course with shuttle buses to course from station where necessary to distance from venue with regard accommodation isn't a big deal.

With the boat and an accommodation, book early is the key tip when attending an Open. Massive crowds travel to these events from all over everything is in demand. Also, book entrance tickets early...usually a discount for doing as admission prices are quite high.

Heading over to St Andrews myself, just got tickets last week. Travel by boat for me, plan to play a few rounds on my way there. Accomodation almost impossible to get, tried every B&B and hotel listed on official website www.opengolf.com and all are full (some places have been booked out for over 2 years), ended up booking at a campsite being set up near the course, hopefully it will be a mild scottish summer.

Booked my accommodation in centre of St Andrews - ended up with a great deal on a house for 3 of us but had to book it on the Friday of last year's Open. even at that stage we were very lucky as there was nothing around!

Biggest problem is a lot of self catering want you to take 2 weeks cos the rental is Sat - Sat!

In 2000 I stayed in a town called Cupar which was about 30mns drive to St Andrews. The Hotel we stayed in was called Eden House and I couldn't recommend the place highly enough. We went back a year later and the owner organised our golf for us and we played St Andews and Carnoustie in the one day. Excellent spot. We flew into Edinburgh and hired a car for the trip.

A group of us went to St Andrews last year
we stayed in The Apex Hotel in Dundee its only 20 minutes
    from St Andrews.
The hotel was great and is only 15minutes from Carnoustie if you fancy a game

Ressurecting an old thread looking for some advice. I am sailing over on the Tuesday of Open week and intend to play a game somewhere on the way across to St Andrews, any recommendations for a good course on the way (i know Turnberry & Troon are on route but man they're expensive). Also I was thinking of staying somewhere about Glasgow on the Tuesday, will it take long getting to St Andrews the following day i.e. can I get in a game of golf on Weds and still be at St Andrews at a reasonable time?

Glasgow to St Andrews is about 2 hrs by road!

As for courses, there are a multitude. And many are just about £20 a round!

Have a look here for inspiration.........

If Your looking for a game on the west coast try Western Gailes its every bit as good as the open courses in the area or
Contact Gleneagles and see if they have any specials on that week
