Forgive me if this has been asked a million times before or if it's in the wrong forum but......

I train regularly and have done a few olympic triathlons and i'm signed up for athy in june. I don't take it hugely seriously, it's more a hobby to keep me in reasonable shape but i do try to improve all the while.

I have a relatively well balanced diet. Porridge for breakfast and i prepare almost all my own meals from scratch and largely steer clear of processed food (apart from the odd pizza of course). My question is regarding recovery shakes like whey protien and the like. are they really necessary? are the benefits far better than say a raw egg, soya milk, almonds and some wheat germ mixed in a blender?

I'm seeing tubs of these things in healthfood shops and wondering am i missing out on something.

    what do ye think?
