Shots fired at Dublin fire engine
    Monday, 18 January 2010 10:43

Gardaí are investigating after shots were fired at members of the emergency services in Donnybrook in Dublin early this morning.

A fire engine, attending a small fire at Beech Hill Villas, was shot at with what is thought to have been an air rifle just before 1am.

The fire engine was hit a number of times and has been taken off the road while the damage is inspected.

Gardaí were also attending the scene at the time the shots were fired.

The scene has been sealed off for a technical examination.

Thankfully none of the crew appears to have been injured.

As shocking as this is.... an air rifle has taken the bus off the road? Tad OTT?

Presumably for evidence gathering rather than damage?

Was the windscreen hit? That alone would need the appliance off the run.

Can't stand people interfering with the Fire Brigade doing their job, offenders should be wrapped in cling film and thrown in the Liffy!! Its actually a regular occurrence that the Fire brigade and ambulance personel get attacked in Ireland while doing their job.

And the fire brigade wouldn't be able to recover the body either, for fear of being shot at. Oh the irony.

Anyone present at the scene, fire personel, Gardai or civillians were lucky if it was an air rifle. It would be nice to confirm exacly what was used. I presume the fire engine was technically examined by Gardai if a firearm was suspected of being used and this is why it is not operational. Any more details on what actually happened.

If anyone has they probably won't be stupid enough to post it here. All you'll hear is what goes out to the media.

An air rifle does not equal "shots fired".

I wouldnt rely on the media to get any story right. They are'nt always interested in the facts, as they say "don't let the truth get in the way of a good story". thankfully no one got hurt.

Well its the DFB who released the story, not AGS. What do they have to hide? And if someone posted info here not in the public domain that I would imagine they would be in trouble.

Are you suggesting it would be a different story if AGS released it? I'd imagine as both agencies were there it should be the same, please explain! whos said anything about anyone hiding anything. You have me wondering now!!!!!

This behaviour directed at ES crews should be treated with utter contempt by all members of the public and anyone found doing so hog tied and handed to the gardai.

Or and here is my favourite , swap them with someone who lives in Ethopia, Sudan or some country where there is little or no ES response. If that's what they are aiming for then let them get their wish.

Would you feel the same way if I started shooting you with an air rifle?

Hiding was the wrong word, I should have said why would the media want to twist what the DFB are saying?

Just on the border between Dublin City and DLR, the place is a dive, and the yoofs that crawl out of it are responsible for a lot of antisocial behaviour in the surrounding area.

Most these guys who are at this are juvenile offenders and are in and out of garda stations every day of the week for various offences and know the courts won't effectively deal with them because of their age. Those who are dealt with effectively by the courts benifit from the lack of detention places and get early release. The system stinks and is ineffective but its what the government have in place. Thats why they get away with it. I agree action is needed.

Did the justice minister not introduce legislation a few years back that gave mandatory sentences for people who attack members of the emergency services? Or was that just all talk?

Half the kids growing up in nice areas like that are just as bad as the ones growing up in the less desirable postcodes.

Only difference is they wear designer brands.

There's plenty of mandatory sentences on the books. The problem is the judges don't like them, won't hand them down & no one can tell them otherwise.

I'd like to believe your uptopian views but let's be honest, emergency services generally only get attacked in bad areas. And beechill was originally built was a council estate. Ignoring that is ignoring the problem.
