Hi ! Has anyone played Silloge recently. A friend of mine told me that he heard that DCC didnt give them funding this year and that Christy was going to close the club ! Anyone know if this is true ?

Just got the following in the post today ! Seems a real shame . What will happen to the course ?

    Dear Member

You will no doubt be aware the DCC has terminated the licence granted to the club for the use of Silloge Golf course.

The termination was notified to the club by way of a letter dated 19th of November 2009 ans following this I have been endeavouring to re-locate the club at another venue; However this has proven to be unsucessful. It is with much regret that I have to inform you of this unfortunate development which sees the end of the C O' Connor Golf Club at this moment in time.

Ongoing efforts will be made in the future to re-establish the club but in the meantime I would liko thank you for your support over the years.

    Yours Sincerely

    CO'Connor

A real shame. They had the course in great shape over the past few years. I'd love to know why they pulled the licence and what the plans are for the course.

Pulled the licence so that they can get a better financial reward with someone else to run it ! Bet it will open under a different name in a few months !

Just to clarify, there is no mention in the above that Sillogue itself is closing. The course is owned by DCC, they just allowed the christy o'connor club to base themselves there, similar to the way the Hibernian club is based at Citywest.

I understood that day to day running was the reponsibility of target golf management.

Thanks for that! I sure it will re-open under new management but as far as I am aware at this present time the course is not open !

I stand corrected ! I E-mailed Target Golf Management and got the following response

    Dear David

Hope all is well. Target Golf Management have been running Silloge Park Golf Course since the 1st December 2008. The golf course is open at the moment and taking green fees as normal. The Christy O Connor Golf Club has ceased to operate from Silloge Park but this has no impact on the day to day operation of the golf course.

Many thanks for your enquiry and if you require anything further, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

    Fair play Dak.

Glad to see the course still open. I wonder will the condition of the course deteriorate now the club has gone or come to think of it, did the club have anything to do with the course at all.

All the competitions including the Tuesday comp were ran by the club which has closed down so I'd think all competitions are off.

Yes, and as Silloge has no GUI affiliation, they can't really run competitions as we know them.

It's hard to take, seeing a club like C O'C being turfed out. Green fees provide more short term revenue than members playing at a weekend. And wait til we see... no doubt after a summer of pay & play only, they'll start up their own "Silloge Club" and take the membership fees themselves. They probably viewed the CO'C clubs as an unecessary middle man, which is crass to say the least.

Surely DCC have more of a social responsibility to provide an amenity, rather than chasing a bottom line? Then again, they could probably argue the membership got in the way of it being a public facility.

Sounds like the members have been harshly treated.

I'd imagine this will give a timely boost to membership at the likes of Corballis, Elmgreen and Hollystown though as they offer a similar type of deal.

Sorry, I edited the posts above to remove a mobile number but I saw that it's posted on their own sites contact page so I restored it here too. Just wasn't sure if it was for public consumption... should have checked first I guess :)

345 euro just for your GUI card ! No reduced fee or other benefits apart from competitions !

thats a real shame.... courses like this are massively important for the further development of golf in this country amongst the kids.

hope new management get in there soon

Did you even read the thread? The Course is still open. The course is still being managed by the same crowd. All that has happened is that the club which had based themselves there has been told to move on, that they can't base themselves there anymore.

Hi guys, again I dont want to be overstepping the mark as I am involved with the running of the course but DCC are starting a new club in Silloge within the next couple of weeks and further information will be available shortly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 606 ✭✭✭Tin_Cup

Just a quick update. The new membership will give reduced green fee rates at all times (this was not previously the case) and there will also be a more expensive option which is a one off fee and no green fees to be paid during the year (should be under €800 but is too be confirmed).

Will keep you posted when I get more info.

Seems a bit steep. How much for the basic membership and how much of a reduction in the greens fees?

I don't know the definite fees so don't want to say in case I am wrong! A letter is being sent out with the info to all members of the COC club in the next few days. Will keep you guys posted.

    Got a letter this morning

    2 options

    1) 330 per year plus green fees of €13 ( excluding Sat 9 am to 2pm and Bank Holidays)

    2) €740 per year ( No green fees except on Sat 9am to 2pm and bank holidays)

Standard rates for non members €20 ( week days) and €26 ( weekends)

By my reckoning Option 2 is only worth it if you play more 31 times a year off peak. In both cases you are paying for sat 9 to 2pm and bank holidays.

PS : I also got a letter about a free open day in Hollystown being hosted by Donal and Leo Craig ( Former Captains COC GC). I forgot to bring it with me to work but will post details later

a complete and utter rip off IMO
the course is only fit for beginners and asking them to cough up 740 a year is daylight robbery
the sooner courses like this go out of business the better

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,361 ✭✭✭f22

I agree, what a joke. Considering you can join alot of quality courses for a few hundred euro more why would you bother with a second rate public course like this, and still have to pay on a Saurday!

Has to be a piss take. Total rip off. I would have thought about 500 Euro without paying ANY green fees. I can't see many taking up that offer TBH.

i think people are being very harsh here, silloge is what it is a good course which is affordable.it is popular with people from varied back rounds.best of luck to the new club in silloge in the present economic climate it offers good value and that is what people want.i am sure lots of people will join sometimes change is good.

I'm sorry, it's not a good course, even by public course standards. Take Corballis for example, it's a far superior course, kept in far better condition and offers a better membership package.

For the same money you can find way better options out there, Elm Green, Deerp Park, Swords Open. For 300 to e400 more alot of doors become open to you to far better courses.

It may as a course serve a function to the greenfee paying public but a good value membership proposition it certainly isn't.

I played it a few times when i was starting out and found it enjoyable enough to shoot 100+ on. its condition can vary gratly from one week to the next.It suits people who pay green fees and cant or dont want to spend 50 euro a round to play a more reputable course.
The only thing i found was one member of staff was a bit on a nut job and it turned me and my playing partners off the place.
I wouldnt shell out either 740 for it to be fair.

Christ alive you can play loads of good courses for much less than €50. Take up the road in Corrstown you can get out for €25 with soup and sandwich’s, on wednesdays in st.margarets its €25 and thats an open comp, bargin with them any other day and they'll give you a deal. Balbriggan do deals and so do nearly ever other course.

I see Silloge's weekend rate is €26 why not pay €9 more and play Luttrellstown for €35, the best parkland in Dublin for a mere €9 more than Silloge....

Good to see times have changed. You wouldnt have got deals like that 3 years ago. Bit out of date with the dublin scene. Maybe sillogue need to go cheaper again.

    From the site

In the twenty plus years since the golf course opened, it has matured beautifully. The golf course boasts many tree lined fairways with small tricky greens that provide golfers of all levels with a fair and enjoyable test of golf in a wonderful parkland setting.

I just couldn’t be bothered to pay €26.

I’m all for cheap green fees but in my eyes that’s a) not cheap for course that it is b) as already highlighted pay a little more and the quality of course will surely catch your imagination a bit more than playing Sillogue.

Go play Castleknock after 1pm on a Saturday for €30, some cracking par 3’s and short par 4’s so caters for higher handicap golfers too who may natively feel more in place on a public course which are often seen as being easier and user friendly. Oh yeah their clubhouse is top class, not been to Sillogue’s but I doubt it’s in the same class as Castleknock's!

    on the green fees at Silloge they are as follows;

    Weekday before 10:30am - €15
    Weekday After 10:30am - €20
    Winter Weekend - €22
    Summer Weekend - €26

    OAP / Students - €10 before 12 Mon - Fri

If you have a Dublin Passport for Leisure Card (Over 55's Card) the Green Fee is €10 during the week all day and €11 For Winter Weekend and €13 for Summer Weekend
