Locked to o2 or VF but jailbreak?

Can I jailbreak if im locked to one of these networks.. I read alot about them sending updates to lock you out or somethin, doesnt sound good

1. Jailbreaking is safe, as in they can't ''brick'' your phone. If anything goes wrong, you can always restore it to factory settings and it will be like new. No risks.

It can, however, lead to trouble connecting to your new network's 3G service. But I don't know how common that is.

2. If you get a new iPhone on contract, you still have to pay that contract if you jailbrake it and move to Meteor (say). So until the contract is up you're better off getting the minutes and texts tbh

I might just go ahead with it then and get the 3Gs from o2 durin the week..
Just worried about travelling with it thought, as I'll still be paying for it I'll probably get fleeced with roaming charges when I head off
