I doubt if you would get a definitive answer here. For a start it very much depends of the condition you had. You also mention having an operation as a young adult. Well at 23, you're still a young adult.

You could get in touch with the IAA medical rep but that may not be the best option as you are tipping them off early. Most likely you would probably have to be assessed by a cardiologist and given a clearance. Then they might consider it. Even then they might preclude solo flight.

Like I said it really depends on the condition. I would suggest initially going to a aviation medical examiner. You'll find a list here

    http://www.iaa.ie/index.jsp?p=208&n=207

You need to know if you can even get a class 2, never mind a class 1. They will require further info and as I said they will need a cardiologist to assess you and sign you off as low risk.

    Good luck with it.

Edit: Just to note if you are in Dublin. Dr Colm Killeen is listed. Sadly he died recently. In fact I would have recommended him as it happens.

I would have the opinion be up front and honest with the Aeromedical centre.
Call them on 01 885 8615 or email on aeromed@materprivate.ie and ask for Phil. She's a lovely woman and will help you with any questions.

If you go forward with your training you are going to spend thousands, so why risk it all to pass a medical. If for some reason you dont pass it you can get a second opinion. My dealings with them have been great. They want to pass you. I would ring Phil and ask if you can do the ECG ( or whatever heart tests you may need) first to see if you pass. That way you dont pay the full price, which is around €600 mark.

A little OT but they just introduced the Sport Pilot licence in the US that doesnt require a medical at all. You're restricted to one passenger daylight only.
