Sky HD for existing customers

Can anyone clarify exactly how much the Sky HD would cost for an existing customer? The website has €49 thing, but has a lot of BS fine print that must be designed to confuse people. It reads 'Sky+HD box up to €199 if you are not eligible for discounted price (Sky TV and HD Pack subscriptions required)'

The only other candidates for the €49 HD box are new customers.
But can anyone verify the exact price/cost of the HD box for existing customers at the moment (2010 price).

If you're doing a direct swap out it's €49 for the box and €60 for the install = €109
If you're upgrade to Multiroom €49 for the box and €30 or the install = €79

So i swap my Sky box (which is not the plus model) for the HD for €109.

Sounds good really. Not the €400 from a year ago or so.

    Correct - €109

Nope, not the €449 it was this time last year.

€15 per month might not be so bad.

    It's a really good box :)

i upgraded from sky+ to HD last weekend

i would reccommend it, if only all channels were HD

its worth the upgrade, channels seem a bit clearer aswell through hdmi, even sd channels.

the new EPG is also way better than the old, a little laggy sometimes with remote presses but overall a vast improvement

hopefully they mite get rid of the HD 15e sub soon aswell

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 679 ✭✭✭Wizard007

The new EPG is brilliant. Did we ever think we'd see the day that we could watch tv whiles 2 other channels are recording and browse the planner or tv guide or anytime tv at the same time :)

Wasn't there some movies offer, where you could get a SKYHD box for free, (with an actual €49 install charge) provided you took the movies package and of course paid the extra €15/month HD sub.

Twas for newbies and exisiting customers. I take it, the offer must be over now? ;)

Yup, that was the offer for Nov / Dec.

Jans offer is €49 for the box and €30 for install for new customers.

€49 for the box and €60 for install if swapping out to HD or €30 for install if upgrading to Multiroom also.

and how much for existing customer to upgrade to sky+

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 679 ✭✭✭Wizard007

€109 if upgrading to Multiroom and €209 for a direct swap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,047 ✭✭✭remoteboy

Why is there an install charge if you're just switching boxes? Does it use more inputs than a Sky+ box?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,036 ✭✭✭BArra

    its 109e to upgrade

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,354 ✭✭✭gebbel

If you then want HD Movies and Sports (+ESPN) then you will pay Sky €92 per month. It's a lot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,138 ✭✭✭snaps

Depends on what manufacture you get...

The best two boxes are Pace (as always in my opinion) and Samsung.

Thomson and Amstrad are not that reliable compared to the two mentioned above. This said, out of a 1,000 boxes sold maybe only a few have faults

they dont make the thompsons anymore, if u get one of them then the installer has given you a refurb

i have an amstrad and have no problems so far with it...touch wood

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 679 ✭✭✭Wizard007

Hi Barra, have you got the new EPG yet on the Amstrad box?

Need opinions as to what is considered an "EXISTING CUSTOMER"

Bought a two month old HD box about 3 years. Got it installed privately and then signed up for 12 month contract.
It was a Thompson box and gave trouble after 12 months, like may other boxes.
Sky would do nothing and I cancelled HD.

Before Christmas I rang Sky to inquire about upgrade to HD. They told me that as I was a HD customer before, I was not entitled to upgrade. I told them that I did not get a subsidised box from them but it made no difference.
I then asked to cancel. Got the Cork office. Told my story but no offer so proceeded with cancellation.
Shorty before my months notice was up, I rang to stay with them, otherwise would have no TV for Christmas.

What do you think I am eligible for?
Have Sky+ Multi room . Would be signing for new HD contract, including multi-room !

Nope. Its basically just a ripoff. Any fool can easily swap a Sky+ box for a HD box. Only difference is that instead of a scart connection you now use a HDMI one. So just swap the two coax cables from the Sky+ to the HD box and drop the scart for the HDMI and thats it. A 60 second job!

If you are a Sky+ Multiroom Customer you are entitled to a HD Upgrade. Is it a swap out you are trying to get or a third room?

Install fees are in place regardless of how big or small the install is.

With Sky+ to HD Swapout, some qualified "fool" has to go out with the box and carry out the install, which costs money! Otherwise the box and install will not be under guarantee.

Dont see why customers simply cant pick up a Sky box from the likes of Argos or an electrical retailer if all they are doing is a simple swap.

It's a swap out I am looking for.
It's just that they refused me in December as I previously has HD. (not subsidised)
Even when I threatened to cancel, they did not help me?
Don't want to ring them again until I am sure of my facts.
Maybe I need to cancel and take out a new subscription?

And make a complete balls of the install and expect the box to be covered by guarantee if they damage it during install? And end up having to pay someone to fix what ever problem they are after causing. And then say they have a problem down the line within what would be the twelve month guarantee on the install, they'd have to pay an engineer to come out. From the customer side and the re-sellers side, it's easier to just let someone who knows what they are doing at it.

You're entitled to your upgrade at the offer price - €109. You might be as well off going to a local agent / kiosk. Ask for a Standard to HD swapout.

    That's a pretty flimsy argument.

Damage to the box is hardly likely during a straight swap (unless you drop the box, but that could be said for any electrical item). And if the customer did damage it, then of course they'd be liable for it, just like they would for any other electrical item you care to mention.

Swapping out a Sky+ box for a HD one is certainly not as difficult as setting up a wireless broadband router, yet the phone companies have no problem with people doing a self install.

Why not give people the option? The ones who feel confident enough to plug in a few cables can do it themselves, and the ones that aren't can pay an installer to do it.

As for the box not being under guarantee unless an installer sets it up, that's only because the guarantee has been written that way, not because of anything inherent to the box. I can buy any computer, TV, DVD player, games system, Blueray player, etc, and install it myself and still have a full guarantee on the product. There's nothing that makes a Sky box inherently any different - other than Sky's policy.

Abselutely not a flimsy argument. You'd be amazed the screw up some people can make of something that sounds so simple and then expect Sky or a Sky Agent to fix it for them for nothing.

sky in the uk have started to do self install options, but they overcharge for the courier to deliver the hd box, so they still recoup a bit on that

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 679 ✭✭✭Wizard007

Good luck to them with that! They'll need it.
