    Hi,

I'm trying to eat less milk chocolate and more dark chocoate with a high cocoa content.

I always assumed the higher the cocoa content the better, but looking at the nutritional info on the label have got me thinking.

I compared lindt 70% Cocoa vs lindt 85% Cocoa Dark Chocolate

The nutritional info for the 85% is as follows.

    Per 100g
    Energy 2210 kJ/530 kcal
    Protein 11g
Fat Total 46g (28g of which is saturated)
Carbohydrate Total 19g (14g of which is sugars)
    Sodium 30mg

The nutritional info for the 70% is as follows.

    Per 100g
    Energy 2180 kJ/520 kcal
    Protein 8g
Fat Total 40g (24g of which is saturated)
Carbohydrate Total 33g (28g of which is sugars)
    Sodium 60mg

My interpretation of the above data is that

the 70% cocoa version is higher in sugar but lower in saturated fat.

The 85% cocoa version is higher in saturated fat, isn't saturated fat the big thing we should all be avoiding in our diet.

Which one would be healthier to eat?

Imo it is far, far better to cut out sugar than anything else. If you are honestly going to make one single change in your diet, I think the best thing you can do is to eliminate (or reduce as much as possible) added sugar in what you eat. Go with the 85% every time.

Or even better, after you get used to it, work up to the Lindt 90% (though it has a much thicker, buttery texture so is not as nice as the 85% imo - they use a higher ratio of cocoa mass to cocoa butter for it I'm guessing), and then some 99%-100% which will have no added sugar! Lindt (quite a smoky, fruity, middle of the road one), O'Conaills (irish and very good value - quite a dry one - cocoa mass dominates, with coconut notes - Fallon & Bynre do it, or their own store in Cork), Pralus (it's difficult to get but tastes very unusual) and Michel Cluizel all do nice ones.

    I <3 Cacao :o:o

Don't worry about the saturated fat content. The particular type of sat fat in chocolate is not bad for you. I can look it up for you, if you are interested, I was reading about it yesterday, but it has a beneficial effect on the body, much like olive oil.

And yes, I totally agree, get used to the 90% or even the 99% chocolate. Great stuff.

jesus 85% choc is like chalk!

Eat the 70% one and the ones in lidl are far better than lint.

Just not the whole feckin bar.

saturated fat never has and never will be the issue in everyones diet.

    Take that back Transform! :pac::p

Bet you haven't tried the organic Vivanni 85% feine bitter (so unbelievably smooth and silky) or The Dolfin 88% which tastes so sweet it is hard to believe it is not a 70%!.

I think you just need to find the right 85% (or even higher!)

agreed some are better than others - personal fave is michael cluizel http://uk.cluizel.com/

    Absolutely stunning.

Overall choc is to be enjoyed but if its below 50% choc then its not choc and more likely packed with sugar and veg oil.

Moser-Roth chocolate from Aldi is really nice, and also comes in nice small bars like lindt so you dont end up eating an entire big bar.
