Hi, I'm quite new to photography & I've recently invested in a Canon 50D which came with the 28-135mm kit lens.. Was just wondering if anyone could recommend some reasonably priced lenses I could buy..

My favourite things to shot would be landscapes, portraits & macro images.. There were 3 add on /attachment screwy on things that came with the kit, one being a macro one which is quite good & will probably do me for the moment but I want to get sharp, clear detailed images!

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!!

    Susie

A 50mm f1.8 is a nice prime lens to have. cost is circa €100

Define reasonably priced, as it's very subjective.

Hey RB, Well I suppose I should have said 'value for money' as at the end of the day, if I'm going to spend I may as well spend properly!

Well, if you're willing to spend a grand or so
    Canon 24-105 F4L (38-168 on APS-C)
    Or
17-55 F2.8 EF-S lens from Canon, made for cropped sensors and has rave reviews.
    or
17-40 F4L which is cheaper and is meant to be super sharp.

50mm f1.8 is a must. Ridiculously cheap (for a lens) very sharp and you can get some lovely effects shooting with low f numbers.

Keep an eye out on adverts.ie for a nifty fifty - they appear there on a regular basis - expect to pay €60 - €80 for a good secondhand f1.8

in addition to the nifty fifty, either the 80mm 1.8 or 100mm 2.0 are great low-light primes for portraiture

    Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS €1040

    Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS €670

Sorry to change it slightly, but I am also a newbie and have the Nikon d3000 18-55 kit lens. I am wondering what I should aim for next or is there a Nikon equivalent of the 'nifty-fifty'? I would hope to get a better zoom lens in time also.

    Thanks in advance.

A good zoom is the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 which is half the price of the equivalent Canon. I've had both, and prefer the Tamron which doesn't have the IS of the Canon. Here is a pic with it.

All shots were taken with a Canon 20D, which is the same crop factor as your 50D
