RTE Scheduling of Mad Men Season 3

WTF? RTE have Mad Men before any other channel, they don't bother to promote the fact and then they put it on at 11.30 on a Monday night! And they move it from RTE 2 to RTE 1. But it doesnt matter because the fact that its even ON is a SECRET. Ssssshhhhhhhhh.

They mickeyed around with 24 a few years ago too, and I ended up watching it on Sky.

Is RTE trying to repel viewers? Do ratings not actually matter any more? Mind boggling.

Normally this is done where a UK network has shown it first and rather than let TV3 purchase it they show it on the graveyard shift with zero audience. Complete and utter disregard for tv license money purchasing it to show at this time. They did the same with Entourage last year.

You can watch it or catch up on RTE Player on their website

For a series of such outstanding quality it's an insult. It should have been treated like the Sopranos, think that was given a 10pm slot.

So they spend our money making complete and utter rubbish about fellas giving up drink, a new age Twink and all her rubbishy characters, a culchie fella pretending to be a detective in Dublin, a stick insect with his own political agenda interviewing politicians and making fun of children and instead buy a great series like this at a reduced graveyard shift rate???!!!

    Yeah, that's pretty much it.

(Oh, and the remainder of your licence fee apparently goes on lifetime ownership of Dick Van Dyke's back catalogue of utterly sh*t medical murder mystery TV movies : "Murder 101". It's getting it's third Rté showing in the last 12 months at 00:30 tonight. Way to go programming!)

And they still basically loop Father Ted repeats in primetime. They need a third channel to shift stuff like that onto and give the quality imports proper treatment.

11.30pm is not the graveyard shift.

I would consider it to be the graveyard shift. I aim to have the TV switched off by 11pm (at the latest) on a Monday night.

Mad Men should be starting at 9.30pm.

I'm just going to wait and watch it on Box set.

Well it's not exactly a primetime 9.30pm which you'd expect for a program of it's calibre

I guess my original comment on this is even more serious for RTE. All of us who watch Mad Men on another channel or on a box set or on the iplayer will not be watching the ads broadcast during Mad Men. Where does RTE get their income? Ads! Why would a company advertise in a timeslot when nobody is watching?
Shooting themselves in the foot (if not the head).

RTE should be showing this during prime time. 9:30's RTE One. It is available on RTÉ Player <<< not an excuse for the Grave yard shift 11::30 is grave yard.

Maybe RTE don't think it can draw viewers at peak time like the Soprano's?
Its not a well known show here or in the UK sadly. :(

If they tried promoting it properly and gave it a decent time slot, it might get better ratings. People shouldn't have to get it on box set/record it/go the RTÉ player in order to see it. What are we paying our licence fee for?

If RTE ever put it on during prime time and it failed to gain an audience I would have no problem with that excuse however RTE have never put it on during prime time to allow it prove itself.

And for some reason I believe that it would do excellently on a Sunday night on RTE One.

I would say any show running into midnight, also RTE can't guarantee an 11:30 slot, it might be 12:30 some nights.

There must be some RTE ruling that states that any quality US drama's or shows must be broadcast at some ridiculous hour with little or no promotion- I dont get the logic

it should only be at 10:00

Wednesday night is perfect for it on RTE 2:
21:55 Raw (R)->Primetime repeat of a show which aired on Primetime on Sunday night, how they can justify showing this rubbish twice within 3 nights at that peak time and yet leave Mad Men, Entourage and countless other "buy for the sake of TV3 not getting shows" off to the graveyard shift?.

Tuesday night is suitable for Raw after or between Grey's and DH.

Sunday Night gives maximum viewers for Mad Men IMO.

TV3 aren't interested in this show. And they have the same kind of money spend as RTÉ on imports. TBH it wouldn't suit TV3 but then they did buy In Treatment I wonder if it will return????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭bleary

And now it's not on till midnight ,still with the quality of the programming how could they fit it in ,

they have mrs browns boys on a Saturday, fade street on a Monday, repeats of top gear

If they didn't buy it , it would be something but buying and dumping the program is just stupid

Its actually series 4 they are showing currently.

Yep a year later and RTE decide to put it on even later than last year.

Are you sure tv3 were not interested??? There have been lots of american shows that are showed at ridiculous times....think 24 was mentioned entourage, Rescue me, boston legal to name but a few (granted all of the above mentioned went to **** eventually but were decent for the first few series)...it was my understanding is that rte buy them so that tv3 could not have them.

all off these should be on before 12 in my opinion!

if they are going to show them at ridiculous time they should give them to tg4 to show as resonable times.....

on a completely different note i strongly recommend anyone with fx to start watching breaking bad...slow burner but epic series.

rte are notorious for doing this

remember when they used to show Laguna Beach at bout 3am, althought it was cr@p, it was popular and has since spawned popular sequels such as The Hills and this was before alot of people in Ireland had MTV. if shown at a reasonable time im sure it wud have been successful for rte, think of all the paul galvins who wudda loved it

Tv3 have all the imports that the can manage on either of there chanels and the put major amounts of money into itv imports they have to divide there money up between that deal and us programming.

As for mad men you will be glad to here that sky have now got exclusive rights to that show. So we will now be able to view on a channel most people will not receive. The same goes for in treatment, true blood and many other us cable dramas.

Maybe it has more to do with nationalisit vanity. They don't want to admit the US stuff is more viewable so they FORCE people to watch the tat they waste licence fee money on.

Fade Street Laguna Beach  both suitable for the midnight slots IMO.

Another retarded scheduling change was Royal Pains, it was on early enough, around 7:30/8, something like that. Then after Christmas, with only about 3 episodes left to go they moved it to between 3 and 4 am !

Firstly I have always been against RTÉ's scheduling of some of their US programming. 24, Rescue Me, Mad Men, Six Feet Under etc.

However in relation to Royal Pains at least it was given a chance in Prime Time and it failed to gain an audience before xmas so RTÉ dumped it to late hours. TV3 have done this with a number of shows.

On the other hand many of the shows that we have mentioned time and time again on boards have never been give such a chance in Prime Time rather instantly scheduled to the early hours of the morning for no apparent reason.

Indeed Mad Men has been even highlight by RTÉ as a good series that it bought online rights for the series having seasons 1 and 2 on the player for a year before showing season 3.

As for last episode I think they were running behind schedule due to Prime Time etc. But as I said in this thread Mad Men would compliment their Irish Dramas as a replacement on Sunday Nights on RTÉ One i.e. RAW, Single Handed and Love/Hate.

I don't think that was the reason RTE moved it, they also done the same with Life (not the nature program) and Reaper, both of which would have good audiences.

    Old thread here on it

Reaper was never broadcast during prime time hours which is a good example of where RTÉ don't know if it would have got a good audience. Life has been on RTÉ Two a number of times, fairly certain it is a repeat. Sorry, not the nature programme haha. Yes again Life(not the nature programme) was never given a Prime Time slot.
