Still using a VCR - hdd recorder?

My parents are still using an old VCR which I must say has lasted a long time and been very reliable. I am curious about HDD recorders however. Being able to record without a load of tapes seems great. But we still have analogue cable tv with UPC...would there be a socket for it on the hdd recorder? Also the connection from the recorder to the tv....would we be able to use an ordinary cable rather than a SCART, component, HDMI lead etc? It's just we have a splitter on the current set up so we can watch whats playing on the VCR on two different tvs. Thanks for any help :)
