Help me out with Pannier

Hey - I'm after buying a Blackburn MTN1 Pannier only to find it doesn't fit (it's up on Adverts here in case anyone's interested). So I'm looking for some advice this time before shelling out on the Pannier - would like to know what will definitely fit the bike.

It's for a Dawes Giro 200 - flat bar road bike. I've attached a couple of pictures of where I want to fit it. (No comments on the uncleaniness of the bike please - I know... I know...)

I have an Altura Dryline bag that I'd like to fit on the bike

    'Lil help?

Your frame doesn't have rack eyelets. You should however be able to attach that rack you have already using P Clips. It's not as good as attaching one with frame eyelets but it does work and is as good as you will get without buying a new frame. P-Clip the lower stays and you can either P-Clip the upper ones or mount it onto the brake bolt.

I had a similar problem before got around it with p-clips (from local hardware store) and plastic mounting that I just happened to have from a saddle bag.

Pic's attached you can see how to do everything there.

PS: Note nice shiny bike! Not that its like that now though .

EDIT: Damn it. Beaten to the punch by Blorg! Argh!

Cheers lads - went into the local hardware shop and they looked at my like I'd 2 heads when I said P-Clips! He showed me some Jubilee clips but didn't reckon they'd do the job. Tried Homebase as well, no joy. Would a bike shop be more likely to have them? Might try popping round to CycleWays tomorrow but don't remember seeing anything like that there before

I found them a bit tricky to get in the right size although I did get one size from my LBS. I tried several hardware stores and none had them.

Wiggle do free delivery, worth bearing in mind.

Yea same thing happened when I went to look for 'em in a Dublin 1 store. You'd almost be best off just printing off an pic from wiggle then asking. Or just order 'em. As for figuring out the diameter you need; a little Junior Maths comes in handy if you measure the circumference!

Get a Beam Rack. It will Mount onto the seat post.

You might try a plumbing or electrical supply shop. They'd be a more likely prospect.

Cheers - have just gone ahead and ordered them from Wiggle so will see if the rack can be fitted.

If you're still struck after the P-clips arrive you could try the Axiom Streamliner rack. Mounts on the rear skewer and on the rear brake mount, so no eyelets required, and better heel clearance than normal racks. I have one on the road bike, hasn't had much use yet but seems to work fine.

That's not a bad idea... I knew rear skewer racks existed but thought they were a lot more expensive than that one.

Seat-post mount racks have quite low weight limits and move the centre of gravity up significantly reducing stability. They are also incredibly heavy. Their main benefit is that they clip on and off in seconds.

A standard rack attached with P-Clips avoids raising the centre of gravity but you will still have a load issue, you wouldn't want to try to carry very heavy loads on it. Maybe up to 10kg max. Heavy loads and it gets very wobbly and can damage the clips.

Something like this is worth consideration if you can't get it on to the brake bolt.

Cheers man - the P Clips arrived but I think it'd be too much of a hack getting it on, so I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and get the Axiom one

One general point to watch is that the Axiom rack has quite thick bars (c. 12mm diameter I think), so you need to be careful which pannier you use. I tried a Dawes Universal that works fine on my other rack, but the hooks were too small and couldn't be adjusted to fit the Axiom. Ended up getting the same Altura Dryline as you, which works perfectly with the Klickfix hook inserts removed.
