UPC HD DVR Optical Audio out - worth the hassle?

I've got the UPC HD box with Digital+ and noticed it's got an audio optical out. At the moment I just have the normal audio out (L+R) connected to my surround sound system. My system also has a co-ax input for digital audio and I'm just wondering is it worth it (from a sound quality perspective) getting an adapter so I can connect the optical out from the UPC box to the co-ax digital input on my surround sound system?

    Thanks in advance.

Not really. UPC do not broadcast Dolby Digital on any of their SD channels and what HD channels they do broadcast, I don't think any of them use Dolby Digital either (although I am open to correction). If this is the case, you are not missing out on anything by not using it.

All the HD channels on UPC are in Dolby Digital.

Yeah and loads of progs on BBCHD are in 5.1. - Kings of Leon last week sounded great even to the point that I felt like saying 'shutup' to the chattering crowd that was coming from the rear speakers!

I don't have a "surround sound system" per say, it's actually a SoundBar which offers "virtual" surround. It does handle dolby 5.1 encoding but given that I don't have a "proper" surround sound (speakers placed around the room) it's probably not worth it. Final thoughts?
