Anyone elses brakes making a grinding noise?

I recently got my van serviced and after driving for a bit in the bad weather, I think the morning after, there was a slight grinding noise the first few times I had to brake, then again another morning and again another while after not having driven it for a day or so. After braking a few times approaching lights etc, it would go away and seemed to come back after not having used it for a while. This never happened before.

Then I had the same noise, although not as noticeable, the first time I started to drive another car after a few days of it not being in use (but again its last use was in the bad weather too).

I don't think it's happened with one of the transit after it has been driven in the salt/grit though so I'm just wondering if anyone else has had the same happen from the salt and grit or is it likely to be something else?

    Any feedback appreciated :)

sounds like you need new brake pads

In damp weather, brake discs can get covered in a thin layer of surface rust within a matter of hours. A coating of salt would only speed up that process.

this is nothing to worry about, as the first few braking maneuvres will scrape it all off, but it can sound different.

Next time, have a peek at your brake disks before you drive off and see if they have a brown tinge.

If they don't and still sound strange, a check of brake pads is a good idea

If its only for the start of your journey its just the sound of cold metal off the pad, no harm.

If its constant you probably need new pads which you should get asap as it means your brake discs are wearing now instead which will cost you alot more to replace than pads!

that's good to know :) Is there any reason it would happen to some vehicles and not others though? I was thinking it could have just been all the salt and that drying out overnight (as it would have been loose and wet when it hopped up there).

    just guessing here ...

Different makers probably use slightly different alloys for the discs ...but I think it's more a question of weather conditions and how hot/cold/moist the discs were when the vehicle was parked. I've certainly seen rust on all kinds and makes of brake disks.

Ok cool, I'll just keep an ear out anyway and make sure it's only happening after periods of dormancy and just on the first few braking instances :)

    Thanks for the help everyone!

Salt on the roads was causing the same symptom on my car last year but not in the last cold spell for some reason or maybe its just that I have gotten used to it.

Its no harm once it clears after the first few applications of the brakes!

Dont worry it's newness it'll wear off.
Its only surface rust. (what other sort is there?).
Oh dear what have you done to it?
Favourite expressions of my company car mechanic.
I think my hand brakes seized. Dont put it on when you park then.
    Laugh a minute that guy.
The graunchy brake thing, after its been parked up for a few days?
Ive just had that, it goes away.
Also you may find that all the petrol drains back to the the tank and you have to hang onto the starter to get it to fire up.

Had the same prob on my motor took the pads off thinking they were worn. They were only half way down but had tiny little holes from the salt. Put new ones in to save the discs, just not wort it as they were starting to mark them ;)

    Hi,

I've a mark IV golf and over the weekend the front brakes have made a grinding sound just as the car is coming to a stop. It also shudders. I took it to a garage who thought the pads were gone but they're fine. He took off the front wheels and pulled out a stone that had become lodged in there somewhere near the brake discs. However the car is still the same and ive the same problem now every time the car stops to a halt. any ideas???

    cheers
