BJJ/grappling in Dublin city centre

    Hi there-

I just moved to Dublin, living in Temple Bar, looking for a BJJ or submission wrestling club. I have not trained for years, and only did a bit of judo and BJJ when I was in high school. Don't have a car and would like to find someplace near the city centre.

As far as I can tell from these forums and elsewhere, there is Kokoro MMA by Connolly station, which is an MMA club with a few BJJ classes.

Then there is a fairly new club Morcegao which runs out of Raw Gym in Portobello, Dublin 2. www.morcegaoteambjjireland.com/

There is also an older post about BJJ classes at Pinnacle Gym, not sure if they are still going on http://www.bebo.com/pinnacleg

Then there are a few classes a week at Wild Geese MA near Pearse St
    www.wildgeesema.com

Have I missed anything in the city centre? Any particular recommendations for someone with little experience, mainly interested in ground-fighting and grappling for recreation and fitness?

    Cheers!
    Damien

Never trained at Kokoro so I can't tell you what the classes are like; they don't seem to have anyone ranked in BJJ teaching. Seems like a nice facility though.

I think the level at morcegao is decent although when I trained there the lesson was given in portuguese with a bad translation - I don't know if that's still the case although as far as i'm aware cesar is still the coach so we'll see. Mas se vocé fala portugês (eu tentaro apprendar), vai á equipé do Morcegao e aprecie-o.

I think the BJJ classes in pinnacle were Phil Graham's - if so, he's in australia now so I don't think you'll have much luck there ;)

While i'm pretty sure there's no such thing as a 3rd Dan in MMA - and you don't get "dans" in BJJ you just get degrees - I think someone confirmed a while back that the BJJ coach in Wild Geese is legit so they'd be worth checking out too.

If you're living in temple bar though you're a few minutes from the luas and in that case I'd recommend SBG (www.sbgireland.com) - a very good black belt coach along with a lot of very experienced guys and there's a beginner program running so you wouldn't be thrown in at the deep-end.

There is Morcegao Team at Bridgefoot St gym which is just down the Quays within walking distance from Temple Bar. As mentioned, they also do classes at RAW gym Camden St, a half a mile or so from Temple Bar.
