I'm newly qualified this yr and have had the enjoyment in paying my first go of membership fee's.
I am just wondering if you can claim tax relief on them like you can on trade union subscriptions.
    Thanks

My understanding is that it's not considered necessary and therefore you cannot claim it if an employee. Self employed is a different story, but suspect you're PAYE.

I rang up the tax office about this a few years ago and they issued me with an additional tax credit by way of flat rate expenses. They told me I could claim tax relief on professional bodies membership fees. I am a PAYE worker.

I did this a good few years ago too when I qualified AAT - I went in and got a rate based on my AAT subs - I then went in with my ACCA subs and was told to hop it.

So, if you plead with the Revenue they may give you a rate, but it's not really related to the Subs, although it's possibly the starting point with the revenue. The effect of this rate was to increase my tax credits and expand my tax band, so it has worked out nicely.
