Numb toes....

I've had some SPD's for a while now, but after 30-40 minutes in the saddle, my toes start going numb.
I've re-adjusted the cleats a few times but it still happens.

When they start going numb, I start pulling up on the pedals while cycling and this helps.

Anyone had a similar issue and what did they do to relieve it ?

    Cheers a million folks

now that the white stuff has gone the problem should 'sort itself out' ;p

If only it was the cold that was the problem, I can deal with that ;-)

my toes go numb on a regular basis. At the mo I am putting it down to 2 layers of socks and it just bleedin' freezin. If you shoes are a good fit it is just the cold.
on the pedal downstroke I just my toes a wiggle.
If it still there in warmer weather look into further.

Are you using overshoes? They stop the breeze going in, even the waterproof ones are nice.

I had this problem for a while but I just got a bigger pair of shoes. I wear Shimano. My shoe size is 43/44 but on the bike it's 46. That works for me.

    Hope this helps

It's not necessarily a foot/cleat/pedal problem. It could be indicative of a back problem (I have very little feeling in a couple of my toes because of sciatica). If it persists you should see a doctor.

+1 overshoes, I use thin rainproof ones, you just need to stop the wind. Cycling shoes are designed to be well ventilated. Besides as of today it is very mild, no?

I had a problem with my toes, getting pains, and numbness after about 60-70kms, only way to get rid of it for a while was to get off and walk around, but it came back again quite soon. It turned out my feet were too far back over the pedal spindle. I pushed my cleats back (feet forward) almost as far as they can go, no more pain !
I think I was pedalling with the front of the ball of my foot, which was interfering with the blood supply to my toes (or something like that !).

Aye, I get it with the overshoes too.
I don't think it's the cold, I've had the problem even before the cold spell, when it was a good bit warmer.

Thanks for the replies everyone, appreciate it.

It may well not be cold, you should be able to tell the difference easy enough between "numb" and "cold," in my experience there is a "numb" completely unrelated to coldness... Are your shoes possibly too tight in the toe area? Do they feel free to the wiggle in that department?

It's definitely unrelated to the cold, with my neoprene overshoes, my toes are quite toasty.
I have Shimano MT32's and ordered a size larger (based on reviews) and they fit well, with plenty of wiggle room in the toes.
I may play with the cleats again....

I do have the SPD pedals set quite loose for an easy exit...

Cheers again everyone, glad to know there are others out there with the same issue :D

I wore ski socks today (under my overshoes to hide my shame), they worked a treat.
