Hya Snow. Welcome to the dark side. I know you'd get here eventually.
    BWAHAHAHAhahahahahaHAHAhahHAhHAhahhaHAHAHacoughAAHAHAhahahhaah

So, srsly, give us a price range. I know you're not a suit bloke so spending a chunk of change on a top end suit is not waht you want at the moment. A €50 suit from Tesco is also not not going to do you any favours.
That still leaves loads of outlets and options for you. The high street chains will have plenty of those shiney silver suits you dread but you should still have a look anyway just to gather ideas on cut and colour.
For a once off you should consider the charity shops. Lots of good quality suits and the money you save on the price you can spens on a tailor getting it altered.
For a cheapish suit of a classic cut try M&S, Bests, Burtons. Slightly up the price range try Clearys & Arnotts. If you suddenly come over all flush with cash and want something exceptional then go see Louis Copeland but don't expect any change from €700 (minimum) and thats before you add shirt, tie, shoes, socks, belt, cufflinks...

If you are not going to get much wear out of the suit, renting one would be a better option.

OldGoat - they all come over to the dark side eventually. :D

Louis Copeland do have fantastic sales, I got a suit for an ex once, who was a 46 in a jacket for €500 five years later they still have it, classic single breasted jacket and it still looks good.

Ah now - Save your money and stay clear from'em :)

You'll be far better off to get a better suit that'll last you far longer than what you'll pick up from either of them to be brutally honest.

There's a couple of lads here who'll have better recommendations but I'll just say the following to keep in mind.

If you're 6ft plus a 3 button jacket will work well. Go 2 button if under. I'd probably avoid getting a vent on the back, this will give you a bit of a bum in the suit!

I'd steer away from pleats in the trousers, they'll make you look even thinner. Go for a flat front, they'll fill you out so to speak.

Go for a lightly coloured, heavy material suit. Avoid Navy and Black, if you get a light material it'll cling to the body.

Is your budget to include suit, shirt, belt, shoes, cufflinks and tie?

Oh... and... eh, you're not the best man, or anything, are you? You're just a guest?

Don't bother with Cleary's, their stock is old fashioned enough.

Get yourself into Arnott's, Ted Baker, TK Maxx, House of Fraser and start trying on the suits that are currently on sale. With a budget of E400 it's entirely possible to get a great suit - you might even be able to stretch to Boss etc with a good sale deal.

For shirts, Ted Baker, Simon Carter, Duchamp are all fanstastic quality (I even saw Duchamp on sale for E50 in BT Cork yesterday). But the shirt and tie will come after the suit.

Get yourself into Brown Thomas before the sale is completely over. For a slim guy, Hackett do a decent cut and I still think they've got a sale on too. Arnott's not as good as they used to be; Ted Baker don't have many suits in that don't have something a bit weird/shiny about them it seems. Have a look in Alias Tom to see how low their prices have dropped also...

Just a few thoughts for ya :)

Oh, and don't skimp on the shoes. Good shoes are very important when it comes to the overall impression.

This is basically rubbish. OP, ignore this advice.

Make sure when you're looking at suits that you check what the fabric is made of. Cheaper suits tend to made upwards of 40% polyester. Try go for 100% wool. The problem with shopping for a suit in places that stock lower quality suits is that the attendants wont be able to tell you much about the material a suit is made of, where as you can ask attendants about the quality of the wool in more up market places.

Tk max occasionally have Ted baker suits... I have a couple of Louis copeland suits, but you can get them for a reasonable price.

Not rubbish at all. Very tall men often look better in a three button (or even an American style three-roll-two) than a simple two button as it provides more visual balance to their larger frame.

The only fault with the original advice is that I'd consider very tall to be more like 6'4" rather than 6'.

Not with a slim fit jacket, it'll just ruin the line.
