So just wondering what people here think about this, seeing as a few of your guys are on low carb plans I figured ye may know a bit.
Is this a significant issue for the average joe and is it advisable to stick to the low gluten grains like rice and buckwheat?
What do you think of the links with other chronic disease? Has enough research been done for us to draw confident conclusions?
Should a public health strategy be implimented to make the public aware of this issue and if so why hasn't it been done yet?

Well I'm coeliac and I've been told this is genetic. I can't answer for low wheat intolerence.

I did not know I had coeliac until a member of my family was diagniosed. She had symptoms, I didn't. There is a high chance that someone else in the family have the disease if one does which is how I got this disease:p

Since I was diagniosed I have spoken to alot of people who were not aware of the disease and ask lots of questions about it. I know I didn't know anything about it before.

Shops and Restaurants are much more aware of this even since I first found out over 4 and a half years ago. Tescos have dropped prices dramatically for own brand gluten free. But there is alot more to be done for awareness.

Many people are not aware they have the disease which is also another reason for awareness.

There is a Coeliac Society of Ireland (CSI) which is excellent and I would recommend that if you need more info contact them or a dietician. I know the CSI do a huge amount of work at Irish and EU level to make manufacturers and governments much more aware of this disease.

Not into all the floozy gacusy language, but I will say that it is v. difficult to live with this when most people and food businesses don't cater properly for it. If a public health strategy was implimented to make the public aware of this issue and help make living with this easier - I'm all for it.

(At the risk of contraversal replies and going off topic but stuff it. It really annoys me that many manufacturers display very visible 'Suitable for Vegetarians' labels which to me is a life choice and not something like diabieties or coeliac which are important to peoples health.)

I can't digest wheat due to stomach ulcers!!! I get serious cramps etc if I do, not ceoliac (could go that way though Dr told me) my veoilia thingys are not flat like ceolicas but not as curvy as would normally be!!!

I was invited to dinner last night - she made the entire dinner gluten and dairy free - it was goregous, even the chocolate cake:):) We all ate it and my boyfriend didnt know... Its hard to live with but once you learn how to live with it its easier!!!! But hotels etc need to be educated, I am not that sensitive but some places that do gluten free bread have it stacked loose next to wheat bread and so on, that is not good!!!

Food should be cheaper and defo more labelling and clearer labelling - Aldi and Lidl are great for saying if stuff is gluten free or suitable for ceoliacs!!! There needs to be alot more awarness of it, even diagnosis is slow in Ireland and can go undetected if the incorrect tests are done...
