In an interview for this week’s EW cover story, Johnny Depp–who became a reluctant 1980s teen idol thanks to his role as undercover officer Tom Hanson on the cop show 21 Jump Street–said he is interested in the idea of possibly making a cameo appearance in the planned Jump Street movie. “I’m hoping they’ll let me do a cameo,” Depp said with a laugh. “Someone will say, ‘Whatever happened to Tom Hanson?’ and they’ll find me somewhere hoarding jars of peanut butter and shaking in my underpants.” The Jump Street movie is in development at Sony Pictures, with Jonah Hill on board to write, executive produce, and potentially star.

    :D

    Thats interesting for 2 reasons.

I never saw a re-run, or even heard of that series, and I never knew Johnny Depp started on TV.

    WHAT!

I used to watch that show all the time as a kid. They better not ruin it.. especially not with Jonah Hill.

    Feck. I'm sad now. :(

Exactly, the amount of rose tinted glasses in internet forums. I'd imagine if Baywatch or Melrose Place were remade everyone here would be like 'noooo, how could they touch such classics?!'

It looks like Jonah Hill has found a partner in crime, as Channing Tatum will soon be offered a lead role opposite the actor in Sony's big-screen adaptation of "21 Jump Street," an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap................................

    Released in the US
in April 2012, the film will see the two actors playing undercover police forced to return to high school as part of an investigation.

Just found out my friend is the Assistant A camera on this, shooting down in New Orleans at the moment. Given the last few films he's worked on have been things like Bride Wars and the Bounty I don't hold out much hope for this :P

    Bump!

Redband trailer that's far too long (over 3 minutes!) and looks godawful!

And not even a hint of the original theme tune - for shame! :(

I should have realized that this was going to be a comedy. Don't really care for Jonah Hill, but with the exception of Ice-cube, I didn't mind the trailer. Laughed at the 40 year old man line.

Saw this last night, really funny stuff. The dumb physical-style humour of Dodgeball with a bit of meta-self referential stuff too. Probably Channing Tatum's best ever role, which isn't that hard, but he's actually quite the comedian it seems. I laughed the whole way through it and from what I could hear in the cinema I wasn't the only one. Well worth checking out as unless Wrath of the Titans turns out to be surprisingly good (or Hunger Games is for more than just teens) it's definitely the best film out this month and best comedy since probably Bridesmaids :D

Surprised this thread is so inactive as it's getting some pretty solid reviews too: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/21-jump-street-2011/

I'll definitely see it over the weekend. Was never a big fan of the original series, but given the direction they've gone with this, that's not a problem.

Oh, and I'm in love with Ellie Kemper, so it already has a couple of stars from me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 89,016 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

The reviews seem to be favourable for this  Tatum can do comedy :p

Just back and I loved it. It's probably the first film I've seen Tatum in were I didn't want to punch him - he really is hilarious in some scenes.

It's a silly but very entertaining film!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,519 ✭✭✭Oafley Jones

It's easy to be cynical about this movie; there's been such an amount of ****e movies that have mined tv shows over the last few years that I don't blame people for not even considering this film worthy of their time. There was hardly anyone at the show I just attended and it's a shame because this movie is great.

Great performances, fantastic chemistry between the leads - both of whom I'd written off - and a really clever script. It does slightly lag for about ten minutes in the middle, but it's been a long time since I enjoyed a comedy as much as this.

Just saw it today as well, and I was pleasantly surprised. Good chemistry between Tatum and Hill, funny back-up performances from Rob Riggle, Ice Cube and Brie Larson, and the overall tone of the film was spot on; essentially sending up the source material at the same time as nodding reverentially to it. At one point they even
have a dig at the recycling of old ideas from the past as if the public will think it's something new.

Only real gripes were Ellie Kemper and Nick Offerman being so underused, but I genuinely liked this, which is rare for me when it comes to Hollywood comedy. Jonah Hill has a writing credit on this so kudos to him too.

Creating a lot of positive buzz this and going by the above reactions I might have to shell out for a ticket during the week.

Seen this last night and found it absolutely hilarious, laugh a minute, so many quotes from it i lost count.

Saw this last night and absolutely loved it. There's many times when trailers make films look absolutely amazing but when I saw the trailer for this, I thought it looked awful.

The trailer actually made it look worse than it is.

Was in convulsions at one stage.
The explosion gags on the bridge were excellent and when the chicken truck exploded the entire audience burst out laughing.

Very funny and highly recommend it.

The trailer does the film a complete disservice, it conjures up a tone of the likes of Starsky and Hutch and it's nothing like that at all. I'm still completely gobsmacked by how good Tatum's performance was.

This film was awesome. Haven't laughed that hard in the cinema in a very long time.

Watched last night and thought was excellent - solid 4 out of 5 star film for me. Would recommend if you want just a silly 2 hours entertainment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,439 ✭✭✭Skinfull

Watched it today and I really enjoyed it. Good laughs but no real direction. It didn't seem to settle in to a particular movie though as if it was an amalgamation of several versions. Also, it felt a touch too long. Highlight of course was
DEA revealing themselves in the gang and turning out to be Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise
Also I loved that the cases the other undercover cops solved were actual episodes cases from the TV show! :D

Very good film and they dealt with the cliches in these type of films very well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,942 ✭✭✭missingtime

At first I thought it was gonna be a little too silly and I wouldnt get into it but I have to say it charmed me round and I was laughing all the way through it.
The scene where Tatums character kills a bunch of people in the hotel room and Hill says to him "You just killed someone" and Tatum throws up on him was very well done.

saw this last night, brilliant funny funny film, i can barely remember specific scenes they just kept getting erased by better scenes:D,

i liked how the trailer only really covers most if the first 10 mins of the film, thats how you make a trailer, show the bare set-up, i really liked that i didnt know that much about this film heading in,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,032 ✭✭✭homerun_homer

Really enjoyed this. It's good to see Hollywood do a rehashed piece of crap from the 80s up right. I was worried going in I'd end up with Starsky and Hutch all over again.

    Very funny film.

seems to be the general consensus here but just to add to the praise for this film. It was the beat comedy I've seen in a long time and Hill and Tatum were great together, Tatum especially a lot better than expected. I love the references to action cliches too and there was never 5 minutes where I didn't burst out laughing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,663 ✭✭✭Immaculate Pasta

I saw this last night and I found it very enjoyable. Jonah Hill was good as always and Channing Tatum was surprisingly impressive. Ice Cube was excellent in it. His facial expressions were just brilliant.
The I'm going to put a snorkle on your face and **** down it was hilarious

I thought the first hour was great but went a bit downhill after that. I found it lagged in parts but it's hard to make a genuinely funny 2 hour long film and that's not to say I didn't enjoy it.

What I liked most was that the film didn't take itself too seriously though. It played up to the clichés with the
    explosion scene on the motorway
, the fact that Hill and Tatum looked far too old to be high school students was also mentioned a few times and
When Ice Cube's character playing up to the angry black police captain role actually said "Play to your stereotypes!"
. I found a lot of comedies let themselves down that the film always starts funny but then it gets overtaken a bit too much by the story but what was good with this film was that they always made sure to rip on the ludicrous story throughout the film as well.

The film seemed to have found a winning formula anyway and as the ending strongly suggests a sequel I'll be looking forward to seeing the next one

watched this last night. has to be the best comedy of the year so far.

you know when you laugh so much you can barely breath, that happened to me twice during this.

hadnt any major preconceptions going in but it totally blew me away.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,273 ✭✭✭Morlar

Hadn't seen the trailer but this was the funniest thing I have seen in a while. To be honest I was expecting it to be so-so, nice to see a movie that is actually better than you expect for a change.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,492 ✭✭✭brianregan09

what can i say funnyest film since the 1st Hangover soo funny neary pissed myself a few times !!
And the bit at the end where he shot you're man in the balls and you're man then proceeds to try and pick up his cock which was on the ground afterwards my sides nearly keeled inwards

    Cannot wait for a sequel

I thought this film was dire. Its the worst thing Ive seen in years. Came close to leaving the cinema which I never do.

Laughed once or twice but boy that film was hard going

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 89,016 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

Quite enjoyable and great chemistry between Hill and Tatum, Dave Franco seems to be getting typecast as the school baddie quite a lot lately :p he reminds me so much of James in his early roles

    I loved
Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise's cameos
