Few questions: I graduated last year from uni with degree in electronics and comp. systems but have not been able to find work and thinking of going back to uni next Sept. to do a Masters. But in the mean time was thinking of doing the Business Admininistration and Management course run by FAS.

So was wondering if anyone has done this course and if they think its worth while?

Also I'm from Donegal and think they course will be run from Sligo, so if I moved would get help from FAS towards rent, like rent allowance?

    Thanks

    Hi

Im hoping to do the same course in sligo , i have an interview next week . My background is in business and management and i have been wondering the same as you.
I was in with FAS last week and enquired about allowances etc and what they told me was if you are commuting then you will get 35 euro a week petrol money and also a food allowance for lunch . There is an allowance for rent which i was told but cant remember , i live in cavan so will be commuting every day (1 hour each way) so 35 euro wont be going too far . Depending on what part of Donygal you live in it might be more beneficial to commute as i dont think the rent allowance is much (ie) you will have to stump up the rest .
On another note , if you are on welfare like i am since redundancy set in then you are not entitled to any more money if you do the course . To explain .... origionaly lets say you are getting 100 euro a week dole from welfare .. with the old system (pre budget 2009) you would have been entitled to an extra 100 euro (approx) from fas , with all your payments coming from fas as you are taken off the live register for the entirety of the course . This is not the case anymore , you will now only get what ever your welfare payment is from fas which in this case is 100 euro , Its a crap system and makes it hard for anybody to move forward especially when people like me are going to have to foot the rest of the petrol bill themselves.
Hope this answers some of your questions , good luck and might see you on the course

i dont think you are missing out on much with the fas course , having recently done 2 , i found the standard attrocious, i felt the course content irrelevant to the current environment , the instructors inexperienced. well thats enough said . i think fas is a waste of the governments resources . i am sorry but i have nothing good to say about the whole fas setup:(

    Pity superbad is so negative,
I did this course in Sligo earlier this year and it was excellent.
The tutor was superb and went that little bit further to help when ever she could. Nothing was ever too much trouble and her experience and ability was second to none.
I would have no problem recommending this course to anyone. However there are individuals like mr Bad who aren't willing to learn and think they know it all.

Not everyone in the training business are as bad as the fat cats that milked the system. (BTW This course was run by an external company.)

Sorry for dragging this old thread back up but couldn't let it pass without defending the fantastic work that the tutor did on this course .

For what its worth , i did the course , passed with flying colours (thanks to the excelent tutor) and landed an amazing office based MGMT job with one of the largest construction firms in the country a month and a half ago, every skill i learned on the course is now needed for the job im doing and only for the it i probably wouldnt have got the job , even though i have a construction background . You get out what you put in ! .
Still Queueing ...... we would have been in the same class ! and Superbad50.........there is only 1 "T" in atrocious .

I suppose I am being somewhat negative but I am going on past experiences and that of friends , the majority of people will tell you the same. I dont think I have ever heard of a person get a job from these overpaid agencies. I am not saying all lecturers are bad , on the contrary I found the two I had extremely nice and more than helpful . My main concern was the content on the courses was a bit of a joke. I had gone into the course with years of experience and in my opinion, of the courses that I undertook these were not one bit helpful or relevant to the job market. I hear these stories every second day from people. As to learning, I am very much into learning new things and did so through fas also , and currently undertaking an honours degree. That;s great that your course was enjoyable and suited for you but I would not recommend the fas to people looking for employment.

let me first say that no I am not still queueing, what are you talking about when you refer to class? I have done three fas courses myself within the last year and several before so I am all for learning. that's great you enjoyed yours and found employment but this was not the case for myself. Of course some people will enjoy certain courses. I am judging from the courses I have done and the content in the courses
    just to state one issue:
I missed a day through sickness and got deducted a day's wage, now when you have just lost your job, have a mortgage and bills to pay this is tough. People on the dole, who are not registered with fas dont have to worry about this. It's like people are been encouraged to stay on the dole and do feckall. This was just one issue with fas system that I had. And just to make you aware , there are two L's in excellent, so not sure were you were going with the whole class and spelling comment
