Hi. My parents live in south Dublin. I live in Navan. My parents have NTL and I have Chorus. Why do they have 13 music channels whereas I have only 5 ? I have the Digital Max package. Another thing is that they recently got ITV2 ,3 and 4 and I only got ITV2.Is there any reason for this that anyone can think of ? Is Chorus like this all over the country. I'm confused

Digital channels are carried on transport streams one old analog channel can be instead used to hold up to 10 digital channels.

UPC Digital in my area runs on 16 transport streams adding more requires more equipment to be added to your head-end and all nodes.

UPC took over Chorus and NTL the different parts on the different networks are in different conditions.

UPC is in a process of upgrading all the network until then they provide the most important channels first.

If you have a UPC branded box you can check how many Streams are in use on your part of the network by pressing menu and then 1789 and scrolling down the menu that appears.

Edit there is the full list for the upgraded areas.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_channels_on_UPC_Ireland

Sounds like you are on the MMDS network and they are on the cable network. Do you have a square shaped aerial on your house somewhere for chorus?

Basically there are two systems - the cable network which feeds the channels via fibre optic to a green cabinet at the bottom of your road where it is converted onto co-ax cable which runs into each customer house, generally only found in built up areas (Dublin, Galway, Waterford, Cork, Tipperary). The second is the MMDS system, which basically operates anywhere a cable network isn't present. It broadcasts channels from towers on a nearby mountain and uses an aerial on each customers house to pick up the signal.

The MMDS system has far less capacity than the cable network provides which means they are severely limited in what channels they can provide you with. You will never get as many channels as the cable network provides for this reason.

This gets a little confusing but my answer is correct and so is this answer.

To make things even more muddy there are two MMDS systems ex NTL and ex Chorus.
