When do you move up age catagories, is it from the first of Jan of the year of your birthday or the day of your birthday.
As an example I'm 45 in May so am I now in the M45 age cat or do I have to wait till May?

It's your age on the day of competition that counts (afaik)

AAI races are done on the age you turn that year ie. Jan 1st but i not sure on whether road races adhere to the same rules

I've started putting M39 () as my category on the 1,000 mile challenge as I feel that my connection to the M35 category is fast becoming a memory.....

With masters' age groups it's the age on the day of competition, with juvenile and junior categories it's the age in the year of competition.

Just pulled this from the entry form for the AAI Indoor Masters 2010...

"A female athlete becomes a Master athlete on her 35th Birthday
A male athlete becomes a Master on his 35th Birthday"

    http://www.athleticsireland.ie/content/wp-content/uploads/2006/05/master_indoor_2010.pdf

Unfortunately entries closed yesterday if you are thinking of entering.

    Hope this clarifies things.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll have to wait till May. But then I'll only be a kid in the 45-50 catagory.
Thats a great thing about this sport, you can look forward to getting older!:)

What happens if you're running in a series of races (such as the Meath road race series :)) and your birthday falls in the middle of the series ?

...or if you qualify for the national championships from the provencial championships and your birthday falls in between ?

Re: Meath Road Race League, its your oldest age category competed in that counts.

Seniors and masters don't have to qualify from provincial to national competitions. It's still your age on the date of competition that determines age group for that competition.

I'll be looking forward to completing in the M40 Cat then at the great Ireland run, and it'll hopefully move me up the rank in my category! :D

With IMRA it's your year of birth that determines your category... plenty of 39 year olds get a fierce slagging :D
