Healthiest Sugar Substitute?

Ok, so I love my coffee, might have 1-2 cups in work and another couple at night. Now I usually take a spoon of sugar in my coffee, but with trying to lose weight - I know this is doing me no good.

Now I would automatically go for Candarel or Sweet n' Low or something but I know some of you wouldn't recommend these because of the aspartame, which I recently learned about. Just wondering, is there an alternative, healthier form of sweetener?

Please don't say - just eradicate the sugar in your coffee altogether, because I don't see that happening, but if there's a healthier sweetener than sweet n'low etc, then I'd rather use that!

    Cheers :)

I don't take sugar in my tea but cannot go without it in my porridge so I've started using xylitol sweetener, it's a naturally occurring sugar substitute which is roughly 40 percent fewer calories than sugar. I honestly can't taste the difference between that and sugar! I've used it baking too and on my oat pancakes, I got a nice sized bag in my local health shop for about 3 euro and it lasts a good while

I asked a similar question recently - here's the link - Sugar Substitutes. We must all be trying to beat the sugar demons:)

Agave syrup is fab on pancakes and xyilitol is lovely in baking, but like MM I don't take sugar in my tea but it does taste lovely in hot chocolate :):)

You could try reduce but if its too hard don't bother, life is too short to give up all sweetness...

Xyilitol is €3.65 for 250g and Agave is about the same for 250ml!!

Agave syrup is worse than sugar.

    Xylitol or stevia ftw.

Thanks a mil for the suggestions. Think I'll have to get some of this Xylitol!

Stevia is probably the best, but xylitol is by far the easiest to get and use.. And good for your teeth.

I'd not actually heard of stevia. Personally xylitol makes me feel sick and gives me headaches.

I use Splenda. It's a sucralose based sweetener, has zero calories and appears to have a complete lack of associated risks (look at the wikipedia article), unlike aspartame. The sweetener tablets especially I've found (when serving to friends) to be indistinguishable from sugar in coffee. It's also widely available in supermarkets.
