I'm doing my easy base training for an IM distance race (August) on the Turbo Trainer and was just wondering:
What kind of time / drills others in a similar situation are spending / doing on the Turbo Trainer at this point?

At the moment i'm doing 3 sessions a week
    • 2 x 40minutes with some drills thrown in
    • 1 x 2 hours just spinning and keeping the HR between 140 - 150Bpm
    Cheers,

As per Don Fink, at the moment I'm simply spinning around 90-95 rpm and keeping my heart rate aerobic (around 140-145bpm). I'm currently doing 3-4 of these sessions a week of between 45 and 90 minutes. I also do a 30 minute session of 100+rpm once a week. I'll cut back on the number of sessions when its possible to run outside again (still not possible where I live so I'm replacing run sessions with bike ones). After a few more sessions I plan to start single leg drills to improve technique. I've 10 weeks of this base training to do if I stick to Finks plan so it wont be until this phase of training is over that I'll move onto intervals and higher heart rate stuff. Cant wait to get off the turbo and get on the road, hopefully this weekend.

2 hours isn't going to do much for IM base as a long ride. That being said it's two hours longer than my long ride at the minute. You pretty much want to hit the specific IM prep phase happy riding five or so hours.

The 2x40s - drills will get you good at drills. A little bit of one legged stuff can't hurt butbid look at more structure in these. Above IM paced intervals (but well below threshold) or big gear work. See can you stretch them out to an hour.

There is a school of thought that suggests that a lower cadence is central to a good IM run off the bike. Look at finding your optimal cadence too. While I used to spin easy at 105-110rpm it turns out 85 or so works best for me.
