    Hi all,
Just looking for some advise/help, I am running my first race Sunday 31st January in Dungarvan, this is a 10 Mile course (fast it says on the site?).
I have been running for 4 months now and am currently doing aprox 20 miles / week. My average run is 10 K in a time average of 65mins.
My longest run todate is 12K or 7.2 miles time was 69 mins.
Has any one run this course ? is it tough?
Any tips for me? e.g should i start slow or fast.
Should i stick with my pace and just enjoy the race?
    Im looking for experience.
Other up coming races will be the My Sportin Enniscorthy and the Wexford Half Marathon.
Do you think i would be able for the 10 miler of should i hold off and get some more mile under me?
    Thanks inadvance.
    Steoc.:)

    Hey Steoc,

Because this is your first run over 10miles it's important you finish happy and don't go out too fast and suffer towards the end.
Therefore, I'd advise to start off slowly and reassess after you reach halfway.
If you're still feeling good perhaps kick-on a little bit and every mile closer to the finish you get keep upping the effort.
but most importantly just enjoy it and you'll surely be back for more!

+1 great advise there key is to enjoy it ,learn from it and then build on it.

Start out slow and at 5 miles you should be thinking this is easy. Get to 7 /8 miles and if your feeling good push on to the finish.

    Enjoy.

    .

Yeah i've ran it twice, its an ok course with some hills, the worst is just after 9 mls but its short. Also the finishing straight (before it turns off the road for the last 30m) is longer than you think, especially if your wrecked!

As a fellow runner whose first race was the 10 Mile Ballycotton run I definitely recommend starting off slow. Slower that what you even consider is slow. I went off with the crowd and ran my fastest 5k ever in the race. I was feeling great, passing loads or runners, even some army guys who looked very fit.

Up to the race my longest run had been 8 miles and as that mark approached I was feeling fine. But the second I hit the 8 mile mark I just hit the wall. I had no energy left. I really lost motivation and started walking every few hundred metres or so. On the final hill to the finish line I was being passed left, right and centre. Those last two miles felt like an eternity but I did feel great crossing the finish line to know I had completed the race.

So start off slow, conserve your energy, take a little walking break at the water stops if you feel like it and you'll be able to finish strong with a smile on your face. Forget about the clock and just have fun.

Do another 10 next week. If todays pace was tough go slower.
One of the easiest 10 milers around.
If the last two miles aint very hard on the day of the race you aint going fast enough. Wear your hrm.................
    Best of luck.

Words like this make me happy :D

After a dodgy 9 miles on Saturday, I'm feeling slightly more optimistic about the 31st!
