Hello lads. I have a marlin .22 magnum using CCImaxi-mags.A very good combo on charlie at proper range. My dilemma is whether to fit a moderator as i;ve been told it makes no impact on the noise as the magnum ammo breaks the sound barrier. Any advise would be great.

hi bruskey welcome to boards .

A sak works with the 17 so it should quieten a .22 magnum .

iv fired standard hv ammo through my sak ,it does help but not a lot TBH .

can you borrow one ,if your rifle is not threaded there is a over barrel adapter you can get.

BTW i shot a bus full of foxes and cats with that set up.

how loud are 22mags, say compaired to a shotgun

cheers jw. i.ll have a look for the overbarrel. it sounds good. If i thought a .17 was quiter and the gun as effective id consider changing the whole rig.But i like the magnum as it never let me down yet but every mutt in the area goes mad and it wont be long until their owners join in.hence the moderator.

hello jap . As loud as the shotgun but at night from a hilltop the .22 crack seems to carry on for ages.

I had a marlin .22 magnum and a parker hale sound moderator for shooting foxes. The sound moderator didn't bring down the sound. I now use tika .223 with t8 mod and what a difference it makes cutting down noise and recoil. At the time I paid to have rifle treaded and add mod it was expensive, wouldn't recommend it for magnum. This is just my experience.

I used a SAK moderator on my .22wmr. By no means was it silent but there was a big reduction in the noise. To me this was enough to justify it.

The noise you hear is made up of two components. 1 the bang due to the rapidly expanding gasses. 2 the crack from the bullet breaking the sound barrier.

A sound moderator will stop the gases expanding as quickly and will reduce the noise but the crack can never be reduced. It can be illiminated by using subsonic ammo.

well explained psittacosis. can you get subsonic for a mag that would be kind to charlie as id hate to just hurt his feelings.

Not that I've ever seen. It'd take away from the point, since the extra poke the magnum has is from going faster. You take the bullet, which is generally the same size as a .22LR bullet, and then make it subsonic, it'll have the same energy as a subsonic .22LR round.

As previously stated no there no such thing. There was another calibre manufactured in america I'm not sure if its still in production called the .22WRF which had a MV of around 1400fps but that is still above the sound barrier.

If you want subsonic ammo buy a .22lr

There are certain manufacturers who supply .22wmr to .22lr reducers which will allow .22 ammo to be shot from a .22wmr but from what I've heard accuracy is not good. Another option is to take fired .22wmr cases and cut off the rim and insert the .22lr into the .22wmr "sleeve". This is not advisable at all and may lead to bad results.

In short if you want to use subsonic ammo you'll probably come to the same conclusion as I did and swap for a .22lr then realise you miss the extra power and buy a .17hmr.

I had the magnum for foxes but didnt bother putting a mod on it as the noise was fairly tame. My friend has a 22 WMR with a SAK and its like an un moderated 22 sub going off.

I have the T4 for my hornet which quietens it down a lot, but i find it top heavy so again I dont bother with it

Dogs around here go mad when they hear the caller anyway:eek: they quiten after a while.
One night i was sitting there calling, a couple of fields away from my home. All was quiet, no foxes, until i heard a rustle behind me. Slowly turned around and lit up two eyes. Something didnt seem right with the eyes so waited a minute and lit them up again closer. It was the fecking dog after jumping out of the run from getting on his kennel:eek:
No kennel in the run now, just a hole in the wall into the shed to a pen for him.

It really all depends where your shooting and what your shooting. IF in and around livestock I would say you need a mod on a wmr. If in the middle of no where not near livestock or houses then I would say you could go without it.

cheers elius. I have 4 fixed spots on top of hills that i usually call from that have proved fruitful so far so its easy to dodge the cattle.I find the cattle come quicker to the call than the fox.I,ve had quite a few dead certs spoiled over the nosey buggers. But isnt that what its all about. The unexpected. Thanks for your opinion and im inclined to agree.;)
