Knee pain and running

I really want to start jogging but I tend to get sore knees every now and then. I think they flare up when I play football. Without asking for medical advice, my question would be:

If I buy some good running shoes and start jogging will my occasionally sore knee get worse? Will jogging help strengthen my knees? Should I stick to sand and grass?

I hope this isn't to close to the medical bone for the mods, I would just like some opinions from runners who may or may not have had knee trouble in the past. Thanks in advance.

    Good runners are a must.

So are physio's though for such problems if you want to go running.

+ 1 on the good runners

If you are only starting out or haven't run in a while, don't kill yourself on the first day - think slow and steady and gradually build yourself up.

And forget this nonsense of no pain, no gain: Pain is the body's way of telling you something is not right - listen to it! If in pain, go see a medical professional.

Go to a good shop that specializes in running, get your gait tested and from there you will know what shoes to go for. Good shoes are a must!!

It is a bit close to the medical bone I think, sorry. that said you've had some good advice there - get checked by a physio / doctor and good shoes, start slowly and good luck with it!
