Thought I'd give this a shout out.

Phoenix FM in Blanchardstown were on here looking for a gym to go along with one of their new year's projects, getting fit, and we've teamed up with them for the next few weeks.

From talking to the lads, the programme is going to be based on Ger the presenter getting in shape (or at least trying to) for the next 6 weeks. Each week we set him a new challenge and he has to try to complete it, he'll record it and put it on youtube.

We've agreed to do this as it sounds a bit different from the usual sort of "get me fit" thing you hear and see. This one is based around the "not too keen on the gym" crowd and the fact that the man is willing to put himself through the mill with us to get in shape and not just make some other listener do it is kind of cool!

Listen in if you're in the Dublin area, they're on 92.5fm and the prgramme is called Anger Management Therapy. You'll here my Antipodean partner waffle at length if you do.

Barry, if you are around, why do he rules say no Olympic bars in the power rack?

Do you use different bars for the power racks?

I know in Hercs we don't let anyone do powerlifting with the oly bars because they're designed differently to regular bars - they're much more flexible and bendy and they tend to get destroyed when you lob 100's of kilos on either end.

Eleiko bars cost $1000 a piece, we like to keep them in good nick :)

You might just be thinking Olympic Bar=what you have in any other gym. We actually have 2 different types of bar. Elite Texas power bars which we use for regular strength training and Zhangkong Olympic standard bars for Oly lifting. General bars tend to be a sort of hybrid of the two and are fine. We don't allow the Oly bars in the racks as setting them down hard on metal can damage the bearings if you miss your landing and slap the sleeve, and because over time the racks take the chrome off them. We have a couple of experienced Oly lifters and they use them in the racks as they know what they're at.

Also what G'em said. €1200 for a bar is not cheap. And one guy one day remarked how he thought his bench was improving and how he felt strong today and when I looked he had the 15kg women's Oly bar. :D So another reason to keep them off is to stop you looking like a tit.

Thanks for indulging that bit of outrageously OT curiosity there folks.
Such things rarely come up in my ghetto gym.

I posted this in the OT thread, might have been missed, a good read (for engineering nerds!)

    http://www.ivankobarbell.com/PDF/How%20to%20break%20An%20Olympic%20Bar.pdf

talks of chroming and "suicide grooves"
