Challenge Walks - Anyone done any of them

    Hi all,

Looking at maybe taking part in one or two challenge walks this year.
I will do the Mourne Wall walk independently and am looking at some others (perhaps the Gus Tobin walk in the Galtees or the Blackstairs walk). The Lug Walk looks a fantastic challenge but not one I'd be prepared to take on this year..

Just wondering if anyone on here has taken part in any challenge walks and if they have any feedback?

    A couple

    - Galtees - handy length, fairly simple walk navigation wise, good weekend all round
    - Blackstairs - good organisation, interesting to do once but second half in particular underfoot is irritating (stepping over small rocks). Navigation pretty easy, about as hard as Galtees
    - Mournes - tough, need good navigation skills
    - Lug - never done it, knees wouldn't last :) E. tough, good organisation, you should practice the route in advance & remember you need to pre-register
    - Art O'Neill - loved the history behind it and starting at midnight, nearly died doing it. No organisation as such.
    - Maamturks - tough walk
    - Glover - not organised any more, great route, harder than Blackstairs or Galtees

Wow! What a reply. Thanks very much for that info, really appreciated.

Will probably do the Galtees one as I've not been down there yet. Would really love to do the Glover Walk - I have done Errigal and Muckish already and really love the area. The Lug walk looks fantastic but I wouldn't have the confidence in myself (from a technical or physical point of view) to take it on!

    Thanks again for the info..

Did the Lug walk a good few years back and it took us an age to complete. We started at midnight and finished it the next day. The ground was well frozen and there was snow on lug which made conditions easier. The descent from lug to fentons was big struggle I couldn't walk for a few days afterwards. The ramblers club used to organise it in the summer every two years, don't know if they still do it.

Have done 7*7s in the mournes - nice walk
maamturks walk was fine lots of up and down, found it easier than walking on the Bens it was less rocky - NUIG organise the maamturks challenge every year in April - check out the link if you are interested http://www.nuigmc.com/maamturks/index.php
Have done the glen cohen horseshoe in Connemara which is a nice walk - again up and down for most of it, you lose a good bit of height on the descents.
The only problem with both those walks is its very rare you get a clear day to do them. Had mixed weather on Glen cohen the maamturks was horrible in the early stages but half way through it the sun was shining and it turned into a beautiful day. Need good navigational if the weather turns bad.

hope one day to do the one that has evaded me the most - the reeks ridge looks like a fabulous walk

    Have done the
Maum Turks it can be a tough day out:D
Comeragh Challenge. its a good walk and very well run
The Bens . Was lucky/unlucky enough to get it done twice before it cancelled.

Now I going to plug the local one.
The Joyce Country Challenge. Its a great walk for a first time Challenge.
Although the Partry and Joyce Country Mountains would be disregarded by the purist hillwalker it is a very beautiful area. The Club have developed the whole day over the last few years and have great support from the local farming community.

I did the official Lug Walk last summer, it took just under 12 hours and I can honestly say it is really tough, probably the toughest walk I have ever done.
Its not on again until June 2011 and Im going to do it again. :D
