    Hi everyone

Hope this is the right forum... if not pls feel free to move.
I heard today the pope released a statement that same sex marriage will ruin creation. I am absolutely appalled to hear this. I can't get over how the church can get away with such a xenophobic attitude towards people.

It is being discussed on the phoneshow tonight also. One point made summed it up, is the pope afraid if same sex marriage is legalised people will "turn" gay... i mean the statement is just ridiculous. i'm so angry to hear in this day and age this attitude exists. I honestly think it's not far from the attitudes that got hitler into trouble.

i'm not particularly religious or gay but i'm outraged at this statement. What happened to free will for all?

    This doesn't surprise me tbh.

What more could we expect from the hierarchy of the church? For them to start embracing same sex couples?

The RCC is a dinosaur. Unless it begins to catch up with the rest of the world it'll merely become something for the history books.

Honestly, still going on about "catching the ghey" in 2010 is hardly going to attract a younger generation.
It seems the Catholic hierarchy is determined to put the final nail in its coffin.

I find it a bit rich as well that Benedict can so easily criticise gays and lesbians yet hardly a word is spoken about the various abuse reports.
He and his cardinals certainly have their priorities in order, don't they?

Anyway getting back to the initial point, it's just another rambling from a church not many take to heart anymore.
I doubt 'His Holiness' will sway many peoples opinions on gay marriage, or gay people in general.

I am biteing but I really dont think this is worthy of discussion. The talk show you discuss has misquoted the pope and from listening i dont think the op heard correctly

Backround, The backround to the pope saying this was he was addressing a conference on the protection of creation what he said amoungst his comments is "Creatures differ from one another and can be protected, or endangered, in different ways, as we know from daily experience. One such attack comes from laws or proposals which, in the name of fighting discrimination, strike at the biological basis of the difference between the sexes," he said.
"I am thinking, for example, of certain countries in Europe or North and South America," he said

This was a clear reference to legislation either enacted or proposed in several part of the world. Last month, Mexico City became the first capital in Catholic Latin America to allow same-sex marriage.

These views are not in my opinion xenophobic as xenophobia mainly relates to foreigners and the pope considers the world as one.

The op says that he is not really religious or gay but feels its an attack on free will... Why does the op see the need to state this. It seems daft. I think the reason is because you dont really care.

This is just another pope bashing thread and really if your not catholic or a follower of the pope your not going to be bothered.

For my own opinion the context of the popes arguement is perfectly acceptable. If we were all gay so to speak creation would become a mechanical act rather than an act of love. Its a reasonable assement and its not only the pope that feels this.

We constantly as people referece the animal kindom in religious arguements. We point out that no animal other than people believe in god.... But what we fail to see that in the animal kindom if you gay your gay. You dont have kids with someone else and buy them you dont get married and you dont have faith.

Unless this offends the op's faith I cannot see how its a justifyable arguement. In fact I wonder does this count as blasphomy as enacted by the law that came in the other day
