    Hi guys,

I've been here before asking about this stuff and the people here advised me to go to fitday.com which has been great thanks but I'm still not loosing the weight.

Can the good folk to throw and eye over my diet / fitness and see if there is something I am missing out on?

    Oats, raw
    Milk 6 fl oz
Coffee, regular x 2 with 1 spoon sugar each
Fruit cocktail or mix (including citrus fruits), raw
    Tuna, canned
    Onions, sweet, raw
    wholemeal slice * 4
    2 egg omelette
    liga x2
    Pear, raw
    Honeydew melon, raw 1/4
    Spinach, raw handfull
    Tomatoes, raw 3 small
    Cheese, Feta 1 inch cube
    Cheese, Mozzarella 1/4 piece ( roughly 100cals )
Celery, raw chopped and thrown into salad
Cabbage, red, pickled spoonfull ( unknown cals )
    manhattan popcorn ( 135 cals )
hot chocolate (highlights - roughly 100 cals )

Now - I am 5,11 and 205lbs - male - I am told I dont look over weight, but I am quite broad and have big thighs and a hefty enough gut ( size 34 jeans )

according to fit day I burn about 3000kcals per day ( life style )
650 cals 2 days a week at bootcamp
and cycle to work 8k each way ( at a high pace ) 4 times a week about 600 cals I reckon.

    So, why aren't I loosing weight ?

    Thanks for the help
    Rob:confused:

hi mate, your taking im too many calories, simple as that. sites like fitday are good but they over estimate your calorie needs. eat 2800 cals a day from good food sources and use the cycling and bootcamp to create a deficit... seeing as you are pretty active you will drop weight quickly enough if you cut back a little on cals. oh, and dont use sugar in your coffee - no brainer :pac:

How long have you been doing this?

Something I've heard on other forums is that fitday overestimates your maintenance calories, maybe try a few other calculators and see if you get the same result.

I can tell you one thing right away. Fitday gives far too generous an estimate of lifestyle calories. I found that in order to get my calories right, I had to enter myself as bedbound, then add in my activities. Fortunately, Fitday had no problem with someone in a bed cycling 50 miles.

I suspect that if you allowed 3000 calories a day for everything, including your exercise, you'd be coming close to maintenance.

Looking at your food, you don't seem to have a lot of quality protein in there. Tuna is fine, so are eggs, but I'm less happy with all the bits of cheese, and even less happy with popcorn, highlights, Liga (???) and all that bread. I'd rather see more veg and less fruit. But I'd like to see more real meat.

What do your meals add up to?

thanks for the helpful and quick responses !

according to fitday all this added up to 2163 cals giving a deficit of almost 1800 cals !

Generally I do eat quite a bit of chicken and turkey in a mixed veg with rice or noodle strifry instead of the omlett/salad diner, this was just todays menu.

I am a bit shocked by some of the comments though!

1 liga = 59cals ( my son and I share one or two most nights )
I can't believe 2 sugars a day is so high in cals

see thats the thing, if you take in 2163 cals you are not running an 1800 cal deficit, even if fitday says you are!! Bloody fit day would have you adding an extra 150 calories for evey hour watching TV !

I still say - eat 2800 good quality calories a day for 2 weeks and keep up exercise. weight yourself at the end of the two weeks.

Yup cut down on the bread, try riveta Instead
When you say fruit cocktail, do you mean the tinned stuff? ..calorific
Try a cup of tea and skimmed milk instead of the hot choc

Best of luck with it all and keep us updated on the progress.

thanks - if you've got a sec, can you expand on good cals?
do you mean cals from veggies etc only?

no, in reality its just mixed fruit, no syrup.
according to the can the hot choc is only about 60cals - I guess they are needless, but I thought once I was running a deficit I was doing good !

Good cals are from fresh whole unprocessed food. That does mean veg, but also eggs, fish (especially oily), meat, chicken, fruit, raw nuts, oats, all that sort of stuff. No processed stuff, no junk, no Liga (read the ingredients, and I bet you'll stop feeding them to your son).

As a general rule, you can assume that if you are not changing your weight, you are eating at maintenance. People place far too much reliance on on-line calculators and ignore what their own body is telling them.

plus, 8km cycle wouldn't burn anywhere near 600kcals, I do the same each day, as soon as you get used to it it's really like a stroll in the park, I'd say more like 200 each way at best.

The equivalent to 1 tsp worth of calories a day over your requirements is enough to lead to obesity eventually. Yes putting on weight is THAT easy sadly! :(
