Buying an iPhone / Google phone in USA

Hi all
I am travelling to Las Vegas in March and am considering purchasing either the iPhone 3Gs or the new Nexus Google phone. Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase them unlocked without contract obviously and can it then be used on the O2 network over here - any idea of €€€ / $$$.

Nexus One is $530 unlocked direct from Google and will work fine on any of the Irish networks. Afaik they only sell the 3GS locked to AT&T and you would have to commit to a 2 year contract with them over there, which they won't give you being a foreigner with no US credit history.

you cannot buy a 3GS without a SSN (Social Security Number) and even if you have that you need to commit to a 2 year AT&T contract.

Not sure wether they were lying or just wrong, but my mate was in the states he said they were selling unlocked iphone 3gs in the apple store in new york. They cost more than getting on contract though.

It's true, you can buy the iphone 3g and 3gs from at&t without a contract, i think its around $600 for the 3gs. However, i'm not sure if they are unlocked.

They're not unlocked. Also, I thought they were only selling the 3G without contract, not the 3GS.

I tried the Apple Store in Boston in October - no joy - had to sign up to a 2 year contract etc etc for the 3GS - didn't ask about the 3G.
