Is there any way to just sign up for the VoIP service with eircom without having any other services from them?

You would have to have broadband to carry the VOIP and a phone line to carry the broadband .... so I guess no is the answer.

OP could conceivably have fixed wireless or cable BB, I suppose his question is can he have eircom VOIP without an eircom IP address.

Yes, exactly. I have a Blueface and a Freespeech account and use them on my Nokia E63. Just thinking eircom might bring out a product like Blueface/Freespeech?

Ah! Now I think I understand what you were asking ....... signing up for a VOIP account rather than the full VOIP phone service.

I have not seen any indication from Eircom that you could have an Eircom VOIP account and run it through a service other than Eircom's own.

I expect the same applies to VOIP phone connections from other Broadband suppliers like UPC.

Yes, UPC are the same, they wont give you the credentials of their voip service; they are built into the router.

Clearly Eircom don't want to push the VoIP thing for home users that much as it would affect their bottom line when it comes to PSTN lines and calls made on them.

Although if they had it as a seperate service and it was competitive compared to the likes of blueface you'd think they'd want the extra customers...go figure

Last time I checked they were not price competitive with Blueface .... which might explain their reluctance to push the service :D

The Eircom VOIP add on to their broadband used to cost 5 euro for 600 minutes to the UK and unlimited local and national calls, or 10 euro for 600 minutes international and unlimited local and national calls.

I didn't think that this was bad value for money, but I believe the take up rate from customers was very low.

How much does it cost now, compared to other service providers ?

I use Irishbroad band breeze fixed wireless with firewal/router and blueface for the phone side,I think they do packaged accounts as well now.
    Works well,no line rental either.
