Well has thawed but no water in house...pump problem or leak?

...draw water from a private well. The supply was down for a week, but since yesterday I know the well is fine cos an outside tap has just started to work again, and it is located right beside pump. The pump itself is connected up to electrcity and the on switch is lit up, so there is power, the valve is turned on...but still no water in taps in the house. The attic tank has run dry, but presume there would be some water coming from somewhere by now. Does it suggest a problem with the pump (it's not making any noise!) or could the pipe leading to the house be cracked (would have thought the outside plastic pipes would take a lot to burst, and even if it did some trickle would still get through).

    Any help appreciated. Thanks.

It could the pipe leading to the house be cracked or burst. Is there any water visible around the well, storage vessel, pressure guage or clear plastic filter?

Sometimes the clear plastic filter can snap at the lid - it won't be that evident to look at if its insulated, so have a look at it.

Theres a good thaw today so any frozen pipe should have thawed fully by now.
Can you use water from the tap to fill the tank in the attic, or flush toilets etc?
Let us know how you get on.

Friend came round and we dug up pipe bet pump and house, turns out that it was still frozen hard (path and tarmac not put in so pipes not really laid that deep, but deep enough so hadn't thawed). As soon as we brought it to the surface the water started flowing again from kitchen taps. Still a bit sluggish, I guess still frozen in parts and it has been a week, but tank in attic filling now so looks like problem solved...unless there's a leak! Thanks anyway.

    Glad you sorting it out.:)
If you can, bury the pipe as deep as possible below ground. At least 24 - 36 inches deep before your lay tarmac. You don't want the same problem next year.
Insulate / lag the whole pipe if you can, but definitely insulate fully all exposed pipe at well and where it enters your home.
