Right can someone tell me if you can play football in one county and hurling in another county...???

Now i know you can play football and hurling for 2 different clubs inside a county (Alan Kerins Clarinbridge and salthill in galway for example?)...

    Any info.. ??

Wouldn't think so, as there are conditions which must be met before you can declare for another county. And if those conditions apply, for example, for hurling, you'd be questioned as to why they didn't apply for football, and vice versa. Would be interesting if anyone had the definitive answer though.

well i dont really want to declare for another county as such... For example kieran mcgeeney played for a dublin club but stilled played for armagh right...

AFAIK there need to be special circumstances to be allowed to play football and hurling for different clubs within the same county e.g. an amalgamation team or if a club only plays football or hurling. I would imagine that in order to play for different clubs in different counties you would need a very very good explanation and even then I doubt it, it would create to many problems.

Couldn't really see it happening. The only reason I could see as being feasible is if there is no hurling team within a reasonable distance of you in your county but there is one reasonably close in a bordering county. Even then I can't see it happening.

Would make an interesting test case all the same.

Ok ..my scenerio... from galway where we have a hurling club only and no football... but i live and work in athlone.. and would like to try my hand at football for the spring.. not inter county standard.. so no need to switch countys... but would rather train and play up around athlone then drive back to galway somewhere..

also be nice to get involved locally.. but i dont want to leave my hurling club in galway.... u know...what do ye think.. what route would ye even go if you wanted to request such a thing...

Im sure this is precedent here.. im hardly that unique of a situation!?

    What do ye reckon..

Well it cannot be sorted out a county board level I would imagine and you are also in two different provinces. I think the best idea might be to contact someone on the board of current club and see what you can do.

Not necessarily different provinces, some Roscommon clubs based around Athlone too? St Bridgets?

Had a little dig around the GAA regulations and this is the best I can come up with.
    Exceptions:
    (1) A Player of a separately affiliated Hurling Club
may play football with a separately affiliated
Football Club, and vice versa, within a County,
subject to any restrictions provided in County
    Bye-Laws.
A County Committee may make alternative
arrangements in the interests of the promotion
    of Hurling/Football, provided that the
arrangements have been approved by Central
    Council.

It seems to restrict it to within the same county but the last sentence may leave a door open for you to make a case. Could be a long road ahead for you all the same.

YA! i was thinking ..nothing is ever simple really in the admin circles.. there is nothin sinister to it .but i always feel that whenever a player transfers to a different club there is always suspicion involved.. i mite try and give it a go all the same...

Sure why not you've nothing to lose. I'd be interested to hear how you go about it and how it turns out for you.

I know in dublin if you play football for Templeogue Synge Street you also play hurling for Kevins. So dont see why not. That said the travelling would be a bit of a pain if you were playing football for one county and hurling for another.

ya .. well its just the way it works out.. i wouldnt be doing that much hurling training until sept ..im more of a go along to match situation.. the club knows my situation and accept this..

Athlone was recently moved closer to galway with the new M6... also.

Just be sure that you have the blessing of your club. Transferring without their blessing would see an instance of a club putting in a block on your transfer and then you are out for a full year. And it seems to be happening more frequently in dublin now

Which brings us neatly around to the whole concept of transfers in the first place. The current transfer process and regime was outdated in 1884, let alone 2010.

Right, Id like to explain my situation on this topic.

I played both football and hurling and football a few years ago, both with different club, the former being with an exclusive hurling club which pulled players from the surrounding football clubs.

However, the hurling club was dispanded which left a few of us with no hurling club. Since our nearest exclusive hurling club was over 30 miles away (and who i must say were rubbish), it wasnt prudent to travel this distance.

Across the county border (which is only around 8 miles) there was an exclusive hurling club who were only too delighted to give us a go. We got permission to play from the provincial council and the county board we were joining (with a great struggle and lots of letters), on a one year basis to be renewed on a yearly basis depending on circumstances.

Im happy to say I had 4 great years in my adopted county until my old club was reformed.

I'm not sure if this was entirely legal with the rules of the GAA, but if we seek action then a number of us would have been out of hurling for a long time.

hi what about this can you play a back league match from (2010) in 2011 and still transfer from that (club) county and play for another (club) county in the same year (2011).

    Hi folks,

I will be moving jobs in a couple of months which would take me away from my home club and a move would be necessary for me.

Although I haven't togged out for the club this year, would I be already registered as the season is about to start? Should I be free to move in the middle of the season in this scenario? I haven't paid membership either.

Totally agree lets go soccer style and destroy every small club in the country
If only the soccer crowd of today had the gaa guys of 1884 in charge, they would be in a different situation altogether, a much better one !!

    anbodhran this mite help;;;
if it is an inter county transfer you have up till July to transfer, but if you do you must not play any match this year with your old club as if you do you will not be able to play league matches for your new club only champ matches.
