Would anyone know where I could get a cheap spare wheel i.e tyre, crankset etc for a Turbo trainer. Its a road bike I have so it would be size 700*700. Cheers

You sort of need a turbo tyre so will probably have to purchase that new. CRC have some cheap rear wheels. You then need a cassette, not a crankset, and a lockring tool to attach it to the wheel. CRC again are quite cheap on cassettes at the moment.

700x700 would be a very wide tyre :)

Also try www.ribblecycles.co.uk, I got my turbo tyre, mat and sweat towel from them. They were the cheapest but they have a delivery charge, I was buying other stuff so it was worthwhile but for just a tyre and wheel you might be better off with CRC. Also check www.probikekit.com.

Cheap chainwhip for €4 from PBK using 10% off XMAS voucher if anyone is looking for one (this is used to take a cassette off in combination with a lockring remover so you probably don't need it if you are just setting up a turbo trainer wheel)

Probably not, I tried an exercise mat before shelling out for the turbo mat and the back wheel sunk down into it and rubbed. Turbo mats have far less give in them, they are also a LOT bigger.

People do however use a range of other sorts of mats, extra bits of carpet, etc. You just need something solid enough to support the trainer that is not going to slip. They are not essential but protect the floor and supposedly reduce noise.

I got the Cycleops mat and riser block as they were cheaper than the Tacx varieties. The Cycleops riser block supposedly can simulate climbing depending on which groove you choose... I am skeptical on that one. Just buy whatever you can find cheapest.

i didnt want to start a new thread,i was just wondering, could the reason for me getting puncture's while on my trainer be from not having a turbo tyre.its a right pain in the arse i have went through two tubes in the last two nights..

Unlikely, more likely there is something in the tyre that you are just running over again and again. The main issue with non-turbo tyres is they wear very fast and make more noise.

What sort of puncture do you get? If it is a loud BANG it could be caused by the tyre overheating, that might be possible.

its not from over heating, its only a pin hole.but both in and around the valve area i'll have another look inside the tyre to see if their is anything causing the problem,i might invest in a turbo tyre anyway.cheers.

    Lads,

I got an estimate for a full wheel for €110 inclduing the tyre and crankset. Does thsi sound reasonable?

Depends on the wheel, cassette and the tyre. New or used? Is it a turbo tyre? New with a turbo tyre and 10 speed cassette would sound pretty reasonable certainly.

    Hi Blorg,
Its just a standard racing whell and standard tube. I suppose I am best off getting one with the turbo trainer tube.

I would strongly advise a turbo tyre, yes. Get them to knock off the money for the tyre.

As I say there is a big difference as to wheels and cassettes... there is no such thing as a "standard racing wheel!"

Is it a 10 speed cassette you need? They are pricey on their own. Is it new?
