Just considering it as an option to try and seek work further afield down the country. Is it possible?

If you can afford the rent, then it's not a problem. If you're going to want rent allowance, then it could be. Moving out of somewhere that isn't costing the state anything, into somewhere that will, can make it difficult to get. I think you have to be in private rented accommodation for 6 months, or be accepted on a local authority housing list to be considered and you probably won't get on a local authority list if you don't live in the area.

Why don't you search further a field and move once you get work?

This is interesting as the maximum is much lower than that.

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/social-welfare/social-welfare-payments/supplementary-welfare-schemes/rent_supplement

The maximum rent allowable is €122 per week (€92 per week in shared accommodation), however you must pay at least €24 towards your rent, so the maximum he should be getting is €98 per week (€68 per week in shared accommodation),
