I have been asked to check out the following.. What would be a good round the world tour for a retired couple in their late 50s in good physical condition. This would be done on a reasonable (low to middle) budget. Travel by air sea road or rail and rented car where necessary. This should take about one year but a bit more would be no problem.
    Any ideas..

Why try and do it in one go, why not split it out over a few years.

My folks did three weeks in Canada in 2008, three weeks between Sand Francisco, San Diego, Vegas and LA last year and they heading to New Zealand and Oz this year.

They did the US and Canada using a tour company, which they really enjoyed. They are very independant and were a bit worried they might be treated like cattle, but they found it to be very good as they could add extras to the tour that gave them a degree of flexability. Apparantly the Rocky Mountaineer train journey is one of the things to do before you die.
