I always found it very accurate, indoors and outdoors. What app are you using?

    Go outside and try it.

IPhone uses something called aGPS (assisted GPS) which isn't as accurate as GPS in a satnav for instance. It relies on cell towers and wifi spots.

Was it always this bad or has it just like this recently has yourcell coverage dropped in any way?

Clear your location data, Turn off your iPhone, Turn it back on, make sure 3G and wifi are turned on and try again.

IPhone is just as accurate as a regular gps - it has full gps antenna and capability, it only uses aGps to get a quicker lock.

right lads update. me and misses went outside for out evening walk.

Gps worked perfectly as soon as i started it, locked correct position in les then 10 secs!

with that app i even got such info of our walk:

    distance: 3.79milles
    avg speed 3.4milles
    avg pace 17.53min/mile
    time: 1:08:03

    Prety cool!

I got an app that messures 0-60milles speed and 1/4milles speed in your car, then lets you upload this data and compeet with athers in region/ world wide.

So now as i know gps is working and prety damn good, i am soooo happy :P

That's not true for iPhone 3G... iPhone 3G and 3GS use real GPS in addition to cell towers / WIFI spots.

It was probably because you were connected using WIFI, in swich case you are located via the wifi access point and not GPS (like on the ipod touch)
