Judging from the last couple of NAMMs - there'll be nothing interesting, just iterative improvement here and there. At most.

The DUC is rife with rumours that Digi are about to release something big (rumoured to be a standalone version of PT in the ilk of Radar - Digi supposedly fed up with constantly being behind OS updates from Apple and Windows). Digi are also supposed to be announcing some new AIR plugins - I can see this being more likely than the standalone box.

TC are saying they have the "product of 2010" that will "revolutionise guitar and bass playing".

IK MUltimedia are dropping hints about Amplitube 3.
It's supposed to be fantastic (but they would say that I suppose).

I hear Behringer have so many new products to demonstrate that they should rename it the Behringer show.

Maybe that will be the trend for 2010 - Behringer buying out other manufacturers of audio equipment.

Just imagine the reaction of the crowd if Behringer announced that it just acquired a majority stake in Digidesign, Neumann and Gibson.

What's with Melodyne's new polyphonic audio editor? Last i saw they were still working off a highly-advanced prototype that wasn't available for public consumption...that was about a month ago though.

Kurzweil have a new board out, the PC3K. This is essentially a PC3X with the ability to load K2000/2500/2600 sounds. Might get them back into the Triton/Motif popularity range in terms of 88 key workstations from what I've been hearing.
    http://www.kurzweilmusicsystems.com/NewsStory.php?id=21

U-He is getting Polyanna-esque reviews for its new ACE synth, seems to be 'the' Analog sounding soft-synth a the moment. The demo is very sexy in fairness.

Ion have a mad looking 25 key MIDI controller that you slot an iTouch/Phone into so you can control the plethora of softsynths out for it with a proper interface.

Eigenharp aren't there apparently, but their Pico is due out soon.

    New Gibson Nitehawk.

Loada ****e from sample companies. Probably a KORE update from NI, maybe a Maschine one as well. Apple give Logic Pro and MainStage 64-bit support.

Cue Novation showing off the Launchpad, Akai the APC and Ableton heralding the new patch for Live they have out. Yada yada yada. Anything really cool will be held back for the Summer NAMM given the economy.

Ableton are giving a joint announcement with serato.
    http://ableton-serato.com/
They're also releasing the stripped down APC-20; basically half an APC-40

Teenage Engineering are displaying their beautiful FM synth (thats an OLED display) which harks back to the days of the VL-1
    op1.jpg

    Native Instruments won't be there.

Dave Smith Instruments will be there - but no Linndrum announcement this year.

So TC Electronic's "product of 2010" that will "revolutionise guitar and bass playing" is a polyphonic guitar tuner. Hmmm, they might of slightly over-egged their marketing campaign.

That's all well and good but does it repeat to you incessantly instructions for when you're in the studio ...

    "When you're not playing, you're tuning" ?

Great Idea though, anything that speeds up tuning has to be good.

Amplitube 3 is out. Looks good.

Fender was good so hopefully they are building on that with this.

Digi offer nothing new except a bundle of all their (existing) air instruments at a knock down price. So the rumours of big things from Digi at NAMM were all unfounded. I did think we might see something more than this.

To be honest I don't see HD going anywhere. In order to sell a new upgraded system it would have to be light years ahead of the current HD system. The cost to Avid/Digi to develop such as system would far outweigh the possible sales.

The reality is most studios use HD and it works fine and with power offered by host computers now extra power is no longer an issue.

Personally I think you may see them drop the LE/HD difference on the software side (much like logic) which would see the user limited only by the hardware they have e.g. you have TDM support if you are HD and you don't if you are using LE hardware. I think they will have to compete with Apple at the amateur/semi-pro level and this maybe the way they go. Still I am only theorising and don't really know anything.

You may well be right - with native power doubling every 18 months (or whatever) replacing the PCI 'card' system may not make much sense.

One would think that the HD interfaces, which have never had much more than an 'ok' reputation, could be due for upgrade.

I guess the 'recession' has halted R+D for a lot of companies too.

Yes. Especially given Apple's partnership with Apoggee - Digi's boxes are a bit long in the tooth to compete in my opinion (I don't want to start off another convertor mega thread ). I mean even at the lower price bracket a Duet coupled with Logic 9 really does p*ss on an mbox2 (again in my opinion - and I am a pro-tools user)

    "Orange amps...
A few new amps from the guys at Orange. The Bass Terror range has a new 1000w big brother - in a tiny box. Along with some very clever dual loaded speaker cabs (again very small), you could have a 1000w bass amp rig that would fit in the front seat of your sports car! The other additions include a new Tiny Terror combo with a 10" speaker, and a 1x12 version of the Rockerverb 50 combo - with the new Mk2 preamp section too."

Teenage engineering OP-1 synth - is this a toy? No midi or standard jacks? I don't know how to hook it up into my setup, is it just a midi controller,it says its a synth!!!!?

    It's a bit mad. Built in FM-Radio, absolutely insane looking 'tape' 4-track recorder;
    photo2.jpg
512mb built in memory for about 12 minutes continuous audio. It acts as a MIDI controller when hooked up with the USB, and has built-in accelorometer (motion sensor)

There's a built-in speaker, a line in and out (3.55mm) but from what I gather the machine converts snippets into MP3 natively and you extract your one-hits and samples off it using the built-in USB. It'll also take samples using its built in mic or the line in.
"When plugged in to the mini USB port the OP-1 shows up as a mass storage device. Ready for you to drag and drop audio files between your computer and the OP-1. The 4 tape tracks are available as well as sampled waveforms for you to manipulate. No additional software or drivers required!"

The sequencer and synthesis types (FM • String • DRW • Pulse • T10 • Cluster • PSE ) look absolutely groundbreaking as well. This is going to be the product of the year when it comes out - hopefully it won't be too 'boutique'. RRP of about e500-600 when it comes out from what I've gathered.

good memory on it i suppose, wouldn't be into sampling one hits these days and exported them back in to my daw unless the sounds were insane!
