graphics missing off screen

i have windows vista.. My volume graphics that scroll up and down on screen when i roll volume button no longer appear on screen, also the when i press the wifi shortcut key which enables it, it no longer says wifi enabled/disabled on screen? Any idea why not or how can i get these back on screen?thanks
