Many of the country's primary and second-level schools are expected to re-open tomorrow after the Minister for Education cancelled an order to schools to close because of the bad weather.

Good enough, they've had plenty of days off this year with strikes and all

I don't know why he felt he had to step in & couldn't have left it up to the individual schools anyway, it's not like the entire country has exactly the same weather or travel issues.

They should be open tomorrow. Most of the snow in the East should be gone by this evening.

Not his fault that a weather forecast did not come to pass. He made the right decision on Friday based on the information available to him. Now things have changed and he has reveresed his decision. Can't see the problem. The Govt do lots of things wrong but in this case they are doing the right thing.

it really makes you wonder what kind of morons are running this country

first 3 weeks after the big freeze started 2 weeks after it was announced that there was a shortage of salt in the country "this" emergency response committee convined (lightening speed we must be the envy of europe for our speedy response).

anyway the first thing they do is close all schools until next thursday:confused: this was on friday evening btw.
the second thing they do is open all schools or at least they let the schools decide for themselves depending on local conditions whether or not to open. and this was on monday at dinnertime and they didn't convine over the weekend what a waste of time and money:mad:

and thats it they did nothing else apart from organise about 20,000 tonnes of salt to be delivered into the country when it is now clear that we don't need it any more:eek::eek:.

but iam sure they all got there expensess and extra money and bonuses and the devil knows half what for being on that committee:mad:

The decision that Batt O Keeffe made last week was welcomed as the correct one, as it was felt that not every principal was making the right decision regards health and safety, and it was too risky for some people to make the journey to their school.

Also, it was the correct decision because of the horrific weather that we were supposed to have Saturday and Sunday just gone, did not arise.

I think he has made the correct decision in reversing the order to stay closed until Thursday, as the weather has not been as bad as expected, therefore it is silly for schools to remain closed.

However, I would like to reinforce the point that it showed leadership and clarity on his part [for once] and he made a universal decision to close all schools, as the majority of schools were affected by either snow/ice in a big way.

I am glad we will be returning to normality to school :)

I think he should've said on Friday that the schools were to close on Monday and the situation would be reviewed then.

Agree. Announcing a closure until almost a week in advance was jumping the gun a bit. Even if the promised weather had come on Sunday, conditons may have been alright for travelling by Thursday. There was just no way of knowing.

Closing schools was definitely the right idea, it just shouldn't have been until so far in advance. 6 days is a long time weather-wise.

It may have been welcomed as the right one in the circles you travel in, it's been berated and laughed at where I am.

At no time does "school is open" equate to parents absolutely must travel to said school, regardless of road conditions. Surely a bit of common sense is required by the parents? There are schools around here which are easy to get to if you live around town, much harder if you have to travel on country roads - common sense would dictate unless the teachers are having issues getting to school that they can open for those that can get there and there is a fairly obvious reason for the absence of any other pupils.

I despair if a government minister has to intervene to ensure that people don't put themselves or their families at risk on the roads to get to a school just because it is open.

So you would have preferred that schools were open and people just stayed at home if their roads were too bad. That way some kids would miss a week of school while others were working away. Good thinking there.

What should be done (and has been done in my school for exam classes) is regardless of whether the school is open or not, work should be posted on the school's website (if they have one). Therefore people who are unable to get to school can still do their work.

A week of school, seriously now, most will be open tomorrow which would make a grand total of three days - hardly the end of the world.

what a stupid decision to close all the schools in the first place. Firstly it shouldn't be his decision to make, I would trust the school principal a lot better than the minister to make the right decision. Secondly, did he really think he could predict the weather in Ireland accurately 5 days in advance?

That is true but as the Dail doesn't stop them being allowed to drive or have kids in the first place - Batt O'Keefe shouldn't have to step in & lay down some kind of Marshall law to save parents from their own stupidity for the sake of a couple of days missed school, crikey.:confused::pac:

not every family can afford broadband and the likes and the whole country doesnt even have access to broadband either. some kids would get left behind.

Yeah but if there's an accident on school grounds you can be sure the parents with no cop on will be claiming big time.

True but at least it would be a smaller minority. Anyway if someone doesn't have broadband / internet etc. they can call a friend and get them to read out the work to them as I did for one of my friends.

As it is as dangerous underfoot if not more so in some areas today than it was three days ago then I'm not sure what relevance that has? Why are the principles any more likely to exercise caution now or parents not sue because they were closed for a couple of days? That's why issuing national decrees in relation to weather are so silly.

Well - thats why he's left it to the discretion of school principals to make a call today. Some areas are fine today.

Exactly, it's up to the discretion of the same principles who couldn't apparently be trusted to make the correct decision last week despite conditions underfoot actually being more dangerous today than last week. I'm not following the logic, tbh.

No I see what you mean. I reckon the Government panicked because of the low grit levels and as the forecast looked like it was going to snow all over the country on Sunday night - they decided to do the leadership thing.

I would imagine principals needed back-up. If one school is open and the one down the road is closed there would be war. The Principal who closes the school out of genuine fears for health and safety would get unbelievable abuse.

Decisions as big as closing a school need to be seen to be transparent and fair. It's unbelievable the drama that comes about if a slight change is made at school level. Every Joe Soap has an opinion on how they would run things if they were in charge, without actually seeing the full picture. Its mega - stressful and I wouldn't want to be in a principal's shoes for life or money.

So for that reason, I think the Batt, did the right thing on Friday, when in fairness, it looked like the roads and footpaths were going to be in a state.

He was also right, today to reverse the decision.

No, thank God, he's not being bullied but he just loves being at home and was so happy to have the extra days off.
I was in town with him Fri and got a text to say they were off 'til next Thurs, when I told him the news his little face was a picture of pure unbridled happiness. If it had've been last year it would've been worse 'cos his teacher was an awful cow. He just hated it so much:(
He has Smyths vouchers he got for Xmas, I'll take him after school to give him something to look forward to.

Ah crap i was hoping they would stay closed til the ice melted round here.... but no word from little brother's school yet.

The school website says they opened last thursday:rolleyes:

Said school is beside a lake and the brat boy is already planning heading down there before school... it was almost completely frozen over on saturday!
Wonder what the school plan is there if its open.... the school bus usually drops them off before the school opens...teenagers plus rapidly thawing ice on a lake...accident waiting to happen me thinks...

I agree with most of that, what's bizarre is half the country has been under snow since Christmas and some of it still is, we are due more snow and freezing conditions, I don't understand why on Thursday the conditions were such that the government had to intervene everywhere and nor is there such a vast change now everywhere that it warrants yet another U-turn.

Step in at the first sign of bad weather if principles aren't trusted to make decisions and be happy to defend them by all means, and keep making the decisions until there is no question and no trust required. This leaping in and laying down a national strategy for a week and then abolishing it after 3 days is crazy. The government seems to lurch about cow-towing to populous opinion in certain parts of the country, flipping decisions at the first sign of opposition - it's seriously odd behavior.
