I recently joined the world of PS3 having been a 360 owner for years. I dont do the whole "my console is better than yours" thing as i couldnt care less about it!

I made a decision to get MW2 on the PS3 rather than the 360 but I rarely find people talking online during games. Over on the 360, there is always people talking, be it banter, annoying kids or team talk.

Is this the norm with PS3 gamers? Is the 360 community bigger chatters?

Found it a bit frustrating trying to coordinate efforts in Team Deathmatch when no one was talking or responding! :(

I have one but rarely use it. Might start getting back into it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,521 ✭✭✭mcw92

very rarely. i have two, but i only use them for games and modes where teamwork is key, like zombies in WAW.
im sick of 12year olds telling me what a f***ing idiot i am for getting killed easily or not doing what they want me to do.
if im playing with friends i probably use them (but that is rarely due to lack of broadband in the surrounding areas.)
so in result, no not much people use headsets on the ps3.

Yeah thats pretty noticeable, playing Halo online you always have people chatting and discussing tactics etc. Nobody utters a word on PSN most of the time. Shame because Killzone has some great tactical potential but its hard to get in a game where people do some chatting.

I do find MW and MW2 very slack for people talking also even on 360. The only games where people really talk is Battlefield, Halo or Rainbow Six. MAG is gna have serious problems if people dont start talking! speak up! Unless your an American teenager:P

I have one, mainly for MAG, kinda hard to speak up if you dont knwo what you are doing or if you are getting you ass handed to you on a plate !

the first thing i do is mute every person with a headset.

I use it in pretty much all the online games I play at the moment: Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, MAG beta, BFBC2 beta and Metal Gear Online. I guess most of the time I'm talking tactics and stuff but if I'm playing with mates or some Boardsies like WolfForager I might start chatting like an aul one about crap. :pac:

With MAG and Killzone 2, playing in a clan is great as people usually have mics. Playing any public games usually means the question 'Anyone else got a mic?' will be greeted with silence. I also wish more people had mics - although every time I hear some annoying child using their mic it makes me re-evaluate this wish.

You dont get a free headset with the PS3 which is a major factor as every dopey 11 year old doesnt have one to play his terrible music and call every one loosers because they havent wasted 45 days on a console game.

Depends on the game in COD ill turn it on and leave it on the table so i dont have the idiots voices coming in over my speakers. In other gmaes ill have it on but when im conncentrating i forget to talk !!Cant multitask !!!

UGGGGGGH, I hate people who put music on in their headphones. Or over excited kids that scream at each other. I agree the fact that the 360 headsets are wired and free means anyone can use them but not everyone wants to pay 30 odd quid for a wireless headset between battery charging and everything else I dont even use my wireless 360 headset, the wired one is the most reliable and probably cost 50cents to manufacture and 12 quid to replace.

I only use mine when I play spec ops with my son in MW2 and don't use it when I'm playing in a room full of strangers.

When I'm playing online I mute everyone that has a mic icon next to there name and thats how I like to play , to many fu*king mor*ns that think it's cool to shout abuse, play music or breath to heavy into the headset.

Its more of a clan thing....I don't really talk when I am just playing on my own. I had a 360 and I know what you mean about them always talking...for me it was equal parts good and equal parts annoying.

Only use mine for co-op games.

From playing on XBox live, I've come to the conclusion that the fact that most PS3 owners do not have headsets, is a good thing.

Having said that, there isn't much chat on XBL anymore either. Thank God for XBL Parties, that's all I can say. Couldn't take much more of that drivel.

Just curious, how is this going to effect games like MAG, where ranking structure is a large part of the game? Surely voice chat is essential for this. Many people thought Killzone 2 was the game that would get PS users on headsets but it didn't really happen.

I only recently got a headset and i have to say im liking it so far(barr the kids who tell me im gonna be their b1tch and stuff like that). If the banter is good then Im more than happy to join in and have even added some friends to my list as a result. If its all abuse, loud sh1te music, heavy breathing or as happened the other day,a hairdryer(i think) going full blast in my ear then i just mute them!!

I only use headsets when I'm playing online with friends. With games like MAG coming out, it'll probably come in handy since these games are very communication based.

I only ever use headset when with friend's/clan or giving abuse to some 6 year old's who is nuke boosting!

    Whats MAG? :o

I use the headset as i have 2 or 3 friends that do the same. mainly just for random bits of info in MP on mw2. i suppose its a habit of using vent on a pc game all the time i just get used to talking... otherwise i sit there talking to myself :(

    edit: MAG details here:

    Massive Action Game.

It's a PS3 exclusive multiplayer only first person shooter. Coming out the end of this month I believe.

The player can get promoted and command his own units etc. Which would suggest the need for a headset

As a pc gamer who's been playing some ps3 games with my mates online I find voice communication a pain on the consoles. I'm used to pre-game chatting to arrange the game and so forth. Its so **** on the consoles that we actually use our PC's to communicate instead, using steam or x-fire... sigh.

For example in 1943 if 3 of us wanna chat and arrange to be in the same game together and stuff its just not possible. Also when I do try and use the PS3's voice system , I can never hear anyone properly. I bought a headset from xtravision there and I've yet to get any solid communication done beyond 'can you hear me'? Screw it lets just use steam...

Not good if I wanna play in the sitting room... sigh.

EA's games are usually quite bad in this respect, they don't even have an indicator to tell you who is talking. Not all PS3 games are like that to be fair. For example, voice chat in MAG works great - you can form a party and chat before you've even chosen a game for example, and I've always been able to hear people properly. I guess the audio quality can depend on the headset.

It'd be much better if they had a chat system like Steam though so that you wouldn't be dependent on the developer doing a good job - you'd have a good experience across all games.

I'm new to online gaming, only started two weeks ago and from what I can tell only annoying 13 year olds with a grudge against their parents have headsets. Like this kid

    Wow.

Some games communication is essential. Oval races on Forza 2 on the 360 with 8 people, 25 laps, pitstops yet not a single crash. Impossible without a headset. Setting up bumpdrafts, letting people know if you're going high or low, it's a necessity.

    I'm pretty much the same.

If I see someone with an [EIRE] tag on MW2 I usually whip out the mic and have a chat. If you want a player who uses a mic add me: TotallyEpic

Havent really used my headset since the days of RFOM 1. Kids screaming down them and people playing music the whole time used to drive me mad.

I always mute everyone. No-one says anything of use
