Travel Insurance with Credit card bookings.

Will a booking by credit card (MBMA) cover travel insurance such as flight cancellations or delays due to bad weather. I am trying to find out this for a brother who is returning to Dublin via Paris and is expecting the worst. Flight was booked last November.

I tried contacting MBMA but to no avail.

Unlikely. The standard insurance that comes with credit cards is close to worthless (i.e. if someone dies in a crash, you'll get money..but that's pretty much it. It only covers you while your actually flying, not for delays, weather, illness etc).

Unless the card came with proper, comprehensive travel insurance as an additional benefit, or he's taken his own travel insurance out, will he be covered.

As was pointed out in similar threads before though, if your brother booked a through connection with a proper airline, any delays and cancellations en route are their problem. My flatmate missed her BMI connection in London due to the weather the other day. She got put into a hotel overnight and onto a morning flight into Dublin the next day, all courtesy of BMI.

MBNA does cover the cardholder (gold card) for certain travel inconvenience situations as long as the tickets are purchased with an MBNA credit card.

I used it several years ago, when my initial ticket with Ryanair was cancelled due to the weather (on the 24th of December) from Brussels to Dublin, and the only alternative Ryanair offered me was in several days later.

I had to call MBNA and ask for their approval to buy a ticket with Aerlingus (from another airport). The MBNA guy did not know much and asked me to call directly the insurance company which was behind the actual insurance in a few days.

Having spoken to the MBNA guy, I bought an Aerlingus ticket (about 300 euro) with the same MBNA credit card, as well as paid for a few other things like train tickets that I had to buy to get to the other airport.

About a week later I called the insurance company associated with MBNA, they posted me a claim form, asked for additional support documents such as a proof from Ryanair that the flight was cancelled. About a month later I submitted all documents and receipts and about a month later I received the actual check from the insurance company.

I did not have to use this cover ever since, yet the main reason why I still pay for all my flights and travel with the MBNA card is because of this cover.

PS: if I understood correctly this insurance covers only the cardholder and a companion as long as they travel together.

Afaik, MBNA has done away with their travel insurance. Make sure you check for definite before relying on it.

I must give a plug to VHI travel insurance - I suffered a delay over christmas and had to claim for overnight accommodation - the claim form was posted last Monday, I had the money in my account on Friday.

Yep, nearly sure I got a letter from them recently saying it was being done away with.

Does (Mastercard Advantage) credit card cover travel insurance....? Booked a trip to Liverpool last month flights were delayed due to bad weather not sure if it was cancelled but the match we were travelling for was

If so how do i go about making a claim??
