Good article but find it hard to believe that they can’t detect the suggested illegal use of “protease enzymes” in the urine to breakdown the EPO. Surely this could easily be monitored. Love the piece where he describes how they introduce the enzyme into the urine sample.
"There is a red powder that's made in an illegal lab just for them outside of any controls which destroys the urine sample. This powder comes in the form of a grain of rice that we put into our penis before we pee…”
Anybody got a tweezers please. As for putting the powder under your “foreskin” yikes. A protease enzyme, in my limited knowledge, breaks down protein…….!! Over to the experts.

The protease enzyme will be sepcific for EPO, thus the short amount of time that the pellet is in contact with the skin/soft tissue will not result in any damage. I have read alot on doping in sport but have never really heard of these protease enzymes used in this way. Assuming you can get EPO specific proteases at a reasonable price it wouldn't be that hard to design a system that slowly releases the protease throughout the day. This seems like a pretty good way of covering up EPO use, especially as you could then add a cascade of other proteases that would destory the original EPO proteases making it almost impossible to target in tests. The new UCI blood passport bypass all this of course by testing the blood levels directly. Unfortuantly doping in cycling is like a MRSA bactrium; constantly evolving and adapting to even the most harsh enviorment.
An area of doping that I think could potentially provide huge benfits is studying the neurochemistry of cyclist when they are on form and doing really well then using SSRIs, TCAs, ect to mimic the neurotransmitter profile of the "on form " period. I've always wondered would this work.
I hadn't realised Zibrel had been done; I remember reading a thread on some US forum were a guy was claiming he was doped. As an aside apparently his 20 minute power is over 500 watts...
