I'm shooting a friend's wedding later this year, so I'm looking to get a fast (ish), versatile lens that'll do a job in the church as well as outside.

The Tamron lens seems to be a very well priced fast zoom, but having bought a Sigma 18-200 recently I've come to realise that the cheaper brands come with fairly big compromises. I saved a bit of money with the Sigma, but it's not a patch on the Nikon equivalent.

Can anyone let me know if they've any experience with the Tamron, or if there are any other (cheap) lenses I should be looking for?

I have a Tamron 28-75 and it's excellent. It's known to be one of the better cheap-but-decent lenses. Have a look at http://www.pbase.com/cameras (it has all the cameras listed first with the different lenses below) for photos taken with various lenses. It's a good way to gauge sharpness etc.

I exchanged a sigma for tamron, I have to say I love it, sure the nikoj would be better but this is a cool lens I've never had a problem with! I've covered around 11 weddings with it too!

Something like a 28mm in a prime will serve you better in and out of the church
