    Hi All,

Quick question. Got married August 07. Neither of us ever changed our marital stauts with the taxman so we were both paying our taxes per normal.

June 09, mrs lost her job. I presume that i should now change my marital status as i should be able to claim her allowance also, therefor paying less tax myself??? Can i get some money back do you think?

Sorry about if this is a stupid question. I've just registered on the PAYE system online so waiting for the PIN. Any advice in the meantime would be greatly appreciated...

It really depends on the level of your individual earnings as to how beneficial it will be - if you are on top rate tax (and spouse is not) it may very beneficial.

Log on to www.revenue.ie and look for form IT2 - send it to Revenue and then submit a claims for 2007 (part year) 2008 & 2009.

Within the online section when you have your pin you can allocate tax free allowance between yourself and spouse for current year. Also make sure that you are claiming all relevant allowances - they are listed and easily identified in the online paye management.

Finally would suggest requesting P21 tax reviews for all years available (once status amended to married) - then wait for Revenue to advise you.
I am sure you will get more precise information but hope this helps to start you off.
