SE Asia tips and trips advice

    Hi All,

My gf and me are heading to OZ via SE asia in May. We are planning to stay 4-6 weeks in Asia. Looking at flights and places to go now. Initial plans are to fly to Bangkok travel north to Chiang Mai then travel through Laos and into Vietnam to Hanoi. Then travel through Vietnam to Ho Chi Minh city and into Cambodia.

Then possibly back through Bangkok and travel to Singapore via the Thai islands and onto Melbourne. I'm looking for people's opinion about where is best, where to spend most time and anything we just have to see or can give a miss.

Went to Trailfinders today and the lady was telling us to take a pre organised trip with intrepid for 3-4 weeks to take in vietnam laos cambodia and Bangkok. She was quoting about £1500 sterling for a 4 week trip starting in Bangkok which includes accomodation and sights etc. Think it might be a bit expensive and would it be better to go and organise all trips and travel when we get there?

If anyone has any tips we'd really appreciate it. Cant wait to go now!!

    Thanks all.

For starters, dont take a tour! I think a lot of people here will tell you that.

    www.travelfish.org is good for itinaries.

I would travel from northern Laos to southern Laos and then through Cambodia, up Vietnam and fly from Hanoi to Bangkok. There are some cool things in the south of Laos that shouldnt be missed.

If you're planning to do all that then you definitely would want to be allowing at least 6 weeks. I went a few years ago and did a similar itinerary only without Southern Vietnam and Cambodia. We had 4 weeks for that trip and really could have done with more! Vietnam's a huge country and takes a good while to traverse so we ended up just staying North, flying to Bangkok and from there getting the train and boat to Ko Phangan. If you plan to take in more than one island then you'd want to be looking at around 8 weeks to be comfortable.
