Where the hell did my files go?

First off let me say that im a pretty advanced XP user, and never encountered this problem before!

Here is the folder i was working on at the time:

    folderbr.th.jpg

In each of those folders, are 4 JPG images, and i wanted to put them all in the main folder.
So i dragged and dropped the first 4 images out of folder 01,
as you can see from that image.

Then i said, "Feck this, ill search for all the files and drag and drop in one go."

So i popped *.jpg into the search, and it found all the images in the subfolders (including the ones i had just taken out of folder 01).

When i dragged and dropped them all into main folder,
it stopped and gave me an error that 4 files already existed in the destination directory.

    Fair enough, right?

No, because all the other ****ing files have now vanished!

Theyre neither in the sub folders, or the main folder!

    fml

XP has actually done a vanishing trick!

Did this ever happen to anyone else?

I guess the only way of getting them back is through the usual file recovery methods right?

    Stupid Windows!

    Hey,

Experienced/advanced XP user here too. I have actually noticed problems like this before. It seems that Windows has problems with doing actions on files when you select them direct from a search results panel. In your case, I can only imagine that it stuck the files into memory, deleted them from the source, but then lost the memory address to copy them to the new location. It screwed up... essentially.

What recovery tool do you use? Obviously if you haven't copied anything into those directories sice then, you should be able to get them back.

Oh how glad i am to have moved to OSX, no more of this bull**** ever again.

I know that not much help op, im sorry. When you search for *filename*.jpg what happens ?

Maybe doing scandisk will recover them as lost file fragments - i.e. filename.000, filename.001, filename.002, etc

I've used File Scavenger a lot, GetBackDataNTFS (which is the least user friendly out of what i used, i guess if i spent more time with it,
it would probably be the most powerful free app) ,
and lately tried out Disk Internals Uneraser, which is very user friendly,
and shows the deleted files in a file browser.

With my usb 1tb external, i have no patience for a deep scan though,
so i don't bothering recovering with it.
I guess when the warranty is up, ill take the Hard Drive out of the enclosure and put it inside the PC, should i need to recover anything.

Thats a good idea actually, havent thought of that! Thanks.

Hopefully this thread will serve as a good warning to other XP users!

I did a search for *.jpg afterwards, for files created within the last day,
but nothing was found, i was hoping that they would be in a temporary directory or something!

... ...invest in a commercial recovery tool. I got so sick of relying on free recovery tools from the web that I actually went out to buy one (ironically, Ibought it over the web!). it's called 'Recover My Files', and it really does recover everthhing, provided I haven't subsequrntly overwritten it.

Haha, not too bothered about those as i could probably find them on the Nat Geo site.

I did delete a folder by accident recently though,
that i've been putting off doing a deep scan with on my 1tb external.

I just want to know of some good recovery software for future reference,
and i guess a lot of other people here will benefit from the suggestions too.

Ill have to check out RecoverMyFiles tomorrow,
    thanks for the recommendation!
